The stress. The horrible stress. That feeling of hopelessness that just eats you up from inside and leaves nothing but the gaping void of despair inside of your soul. She had been on her fair share of battlefields, had seen friends get ripped apart by Grimm, had faced other humans that only wanted to see her dead, had been outnumbered, gagged and chained... even fought and defeated a Graylich by herself. She had stared death in the face and laughed a thousand time and feared for her life a thousand more but it was nothing. Nothing compared to what she had to do now. Her eyes darted in every direction, looking for an escape route, scanning the environment for possible places to hide. She was in hostile territory. Everything was out to get her. She was out of her comfort zone, she was weaponless, and with each step she took, she got closer to the grave. She won't make. She won't last until the end. She won't reach the finish line, she won't raise the flag. She was sweating anxiously, her mouth was dry and she felt powerless.
Today, Xanthia was going to be a responsible and productive member of society.
She was wearing a black skirt under a white shirt, had actually asked her girls to help her tie her hair in a nice long side braid and had ditched her usual ranger boots for actual heels. She had red lipstick on, had painted her nails and spent so much time looking at herself in the mirror to make sure she was as perfect as she'd get that she didn't have time to consume her morning cup of joe. Xan had entered the main faculty building where she mentioned at the front desk that she had a nine o'clock with the interim headmaster before being gently escorted through the different security levels and advised by an assistant that the head of the faculty would see her soon and that she could take a seat in the nice little lounge near the office. She was so tense she probably couldn't have bent her knees correctly so she preferred to remain standing. She looked like a soldier standing at attention, which is what she was unconsciously doing. She was holding her leather document briefcase with both hands and staring at a random point in front of her which made it seem as though she was observing a commemorative plaque depicting the names of the people who had been part of the faculty throughout the years. She was actually only thinking about the little strain the wearing of heels was placing on her shins and she found solace in the fact that she at least got some kind of work-out out of this so far.
It all had looked so exciting! She had seen the communication completely by chance when checking in after an escort mission back to Vytal to validate the completion (and get her pay). She would've missed it if that intern hadn't tripped and fell in front of the billboard. If Xanthia hadn't helped her up, she would've never known that the young lady had tripped because she was in a hurry because she was asked to fetch some pastries for that teacher's retirement party. Then she starting rambling on the fact that she'd had to stay in late to post up that there was an open Combat Instructor position. And just where would they find someone who knew about weapons and tactics and fighting styles, that could keep a group in order and help them better themselves. Oh how would the other instructors would complain of having to many students in their classes to be effective and offer enough immersion for everyone and so forth. And as the intern vented off her frustration to Xanthia who hadn't asked anything more than "Are you okay?" and had helped the young lady up, the blondie began thinking that, hey, that could be fun and would certainly help pay the bills a bit more than just semimonthly excursions to the outside world to risk her life.
So she had applied for the job... and was offered an interview the next day.
The inaudible ticking of her small wristwatch sounded to her like the the swishing of a giant, razor-edged pendulum that swung rhythmically, cutting away the pecious seconds before her inevitable meeting with the Head of the academy. She pulled at her sleeve and her heart skipped a beat when she saw that 8:59 was fading away into the past. Her name was called, she exhaled softly and walked into the office she had been invited into with a nervous smile. She would be shaking in her beautiful heeled shoes... if she was not trying very hard not to.

► Minette Belrose 670 words i am inconsistent af | The headmaster's office was painfully quiet. The scratch of pen across paper, the quiet thrumming of fingers against the glass of a holographic keyboard display, and the light clinking of polished ceramic against wood every so often were the only sounds that Minette had heard for about the past three hours since her arrival. The day was not a particularly busy one, which was cause for concern, but it was certainly quite a weight to carry for one person. The supposed Assistant Headmaster of Vytal Academy had been tasked with a plethora of paperwork, phone calls, and meetings meant to occupy the time and effort of two people, herself and the actual Headmaster. Since she had gotten here, it had been nothing but early mornings, busy days, and late nights at work. And on top of all that, the Vytal Ball was still just around the corner, and finalizing plans and other accommodations also fell to her.
Uncharacteristically, Minette had brewed some coffee to help her stay awake and alert. She had rarely, if ever in her life, drank coffee, and had made the mistake of picking a bag of grounds at random, and drinking her coffee black. It wasn't awful, but it could have been better - she certainly couldn't see herself drinking it regularly. The shockingly strong bitterness gave her a bit of a jump, certainly, but energy was energy. She signed off on the final admissions document she'd been reviewing and set it aside, and just in time, too. The small intercom on her desk buzzed and a red light went on beside a label that read "Front Desk". Her hand hovered carefully over the button beneath the light and she let out a sigh before she pressed down. "Yes?" She released the button and the light went off. For a brief moment, there was silence, and Minette wondered if her voice had gone through. It had happened before. But a voice crackled through the small speaker. "Your 9 o'clock is here, Miss Belrose."
Ah, right. "Send her in." A large manila folder sat open on a stand next to her computer monitor. One of the interns had found someone to fill the recently-vacated position of the school's combat instructor, and had made the...spectacular decision to schedule an interview the next day. This folder contained everything Minette could find on the woman in the small amount of time she was given, mostly work done from home. She hadn't even checked through it after assembling it the night prior, she'd set it down, polished off a bottle of tequila, and called it a night. She flipped through it idly now, skimming it for some details.
"Xanthia Meidio...Hunter...ex Legion Military...28 years old..." She was capable, of that there was no doubt. Although, much like herself when she had first gotten here, Minette couldn't find any evidence of having taught in a classroom setting before. Still, that could easily be rectified with a bit of experience. If her life had taught her anything, its that Hunters were quite adaptable people by nature - and good lord did you need to be able to adapt to deal with loud, hormonal young adults.
She folded her hands in front of her and took a deep breath. She didn't really feel qualified to conduct interviews that could influence the school in such a big way, but she also didn't have the mental or emotional energy to put into raising the issue - not that she had anyone to raise it with in the first place. When the highest authority on the island has questions, who are they supposed to ask? Well, it was too late now. She adjusted her shawl and straightened out the sleeves of her blouse, gave her monitor a quick tap on the top to retract it into the desk. And then she waited, crimson eyes fixed on the great wooden door at the end of the vast echo chamber of a room she had been sitting in for the past three hours.

The sound of Xanthia's heels echoed loudly on the marble floor of the office and she felt a bit uncomfortable for it. It felt has though the silence in the room had a mind of it's own that fed on every small noise and just amplified them to the extreme as it was absorbed into the giant void of the silent entity. What was worse than the silence though was that scarlet gaze. It felt heavy, as if she was being scanned from head to toe. She wasn't used to these shoes and may not have had the best gait but if there was one thing that Xanthia was, it was determined. As soon as she had entered the large room, she had anchored her emerald stare in those ruby pearls behind the desk with what she thought of as a sweet smile. The feline woman arose from her desk as Xanthia approached and extended a hand in the normal formal greeting fashion and the only thing the blondie could think at that time, without even a change of expression was "Holy crap she's tall!". She outstretched her right hand and grasped the queen's in a firm handshake. A flash of interest passed in her eyes... As one person of over-average physical strength that does her best to be gentle, she felt a familiar feeling before letting go of the cat-woman's digits. She was invited to sit down and did so after straightening her skirt and put her briefcase on her thighs.
"Thank you for having me on such short notice, I was not really expecting an appointment the day after I applied for the position..."
She fished inside her briefcase and produced some documents that she placed on the desk in front of Minette. They were her resume, her certification an active Huntress renewed for a fourth year and a letter of release from the Legion military forces with her Sergeant rank at the end of her contract. She giggled nervously.
"I figured you may not have had the time to run a background check with such a late notice and considering how busy you must be with the Festival, the Tournament and there's also a rumor that you're basically running the whole operation by yourself... So I thought I'd help a lady out a bit."
She was smiling in what she hoped was a friendly way and joined her hands on top of her briefcase. She was used to proving herself on a battlefield with a weapon in hand and death staring you in the face. Everything was so simple then, you just to make sure that you were the one leaving walking up straight. This was something different where the outcome was decided by the opinion someone had of your value... but Xanthia was seeing this as some kind of challenge and she seldom backed away from challenges that could help her better herself. She felt her gaze gravitate towards the mug on the desk and quickly returned to the crimson eyes with a nervous smile... The last thing she needed right now was having her possible new boss thinking the new girl was staring at her cleavage during the interview...
