The Plot
Remnant is full of legends and stories. Some of them true, some made up. As with most stories, the history of our world - or at least as we know it - begins with conflict. Man, born from the dust, was thrown into a world of darkness and destruction. The Creatures of Grimm, the very embodiment of primordial chaos, set their sights on mankind and all its creation. For years, mankind battled the forces of evil, with the Creatures of Grimm seemingly hellbent on sending mankind back to the void. However, mankind learned to harness the very power of the planet - Nature’s Wrath - appropriately naming it Dust.
Thanks to Dust, mankind pushed the creatures of Grimm into the darkness, establishing four havens of life. These settlements would become the great kingdoms of Vale, Mantle, Vacuo, and Mistral. Their peace was earned through sweat and blood, with each of the kingdoms doing their part in driving the forces of darkness back. However, evil from the outside world was not the only cause of concern. Malice began to stir in the hearts of man, eventually resulting in a disastrous war that would claim many lives. According to historians today, this conflict would forever be known as the Great War.
Years passed, mankind flourished, and the darkness was held at bay by the dim pools of light cast by humanity’s ingenuity. For some centuries, life was stable. Civilizations came to life in all corners of the world and a great Remnant rose from the ashes of what could have been. Those ashes remained, though, and it would be all too soon that they would become the natural state of things once more. Long was it known that the effects of Dust were ineffective in the void of space, and so when a great pulse of energy came from that starry void, it came as no surprise to see the effects of Dust desist across the world.
No surprise, but certainly a catastrophe; the forces of Grimm capitalized on that weakness with ruthless efficiency, and it was mere weeks before the centers of humankind were shoved from their homes into the wilderness.
Years passed, and as it did new methods of preservation were discovered. Mankind survived, and the darkness was held at bay by the flickering spark of mankind’s perseverance. For some centuries, life was fleeting. The reignition of Dust brought with it the rekindling of man’s purpose. They burst from their damp, underground homes and began to claw back towards the light that they had once so carefully cultivated.
Taking back their ruined cities and their scattered monuments, the settlers came upon a city of old. No memories remained of it, but it was clear it was once a great center of civilization. Named Rift, it became the first established city built on the risen ashes of Remnant. Years passed. New countries were built on the ruins of the old, mankind rebuilt, and the darkness was held at bay by the roaring fires of creation.
Great dragons manifested out of the nature of Remnant’s shadows, the behemoths were drawn to the sudden outpouring of energy created by man’s resurgence into the world. Their power was awe-inspiring, and with it, they grew to be known as the Four Wills of Remnant. The Cult of Saint Ashes followed, declaring themselves harbingers of the Wills and claimant of being the pure-hearted followers of Remnant and its natural state.
Legends. Stories, scattered through time. A thousand years have passed, and now all that remains of Old Remnant are those legends and stories. But Remnant has been reborn. Its image is darker, its visage more twisted, but even through a twisted corridor can light shine.
Shine your light, guardian of Remnant. Shine your light and push back the darkness.
If you can...
