Aegle might have cursed as Lily ducked clear of her uppercut, which sailed harmlessly past the fleeing faunus' ears before she could redirect it. Her muscles ached as she came out of her quick side step, a constant reminder that she was already fighting on borrowed time. Focusing, the pint sized pugilist tracked her friend in flight, and waited nary a second before she gave chase. Her heart pounded loudly in her ears as she lurched into motion, but Aegle ignored its warning. No good would come from letting Lily catch her breath, and she knew no other way to fight than up close. She needed to keep pressure on her friend if she expected to win.
Whenever 'fast' and 'Aegle' came up in the same sentence, they were usually accompanied by 'deceptively'. This had less to do with any exceptional speed on Aegle's parts and more to do with the fact that, when she was moving, Aegle did not look like she should be very fast at all. She loped more than ran, and did with long strides ill-suited to her usual ambling, limping gait. In truth, it was quite a bit harder than it seemed, and took a lot of effort, energy and practice. There could be little doubt that, in a foot race, even without the use of their respective semblances, Lily had Aegle outmatched. If Lily chose to, she could have easily kept beyond Aegle's range indefinitely, allowing that she didn't tire before the tireless orange huntress.
Aegle fought down the swoon which tried to overcome her as she lurched up to speed. Her head had been throbbing even before her heart had started to hammer staccato on her bruised and battered ribcage. Now, it was by force of her indomitable will alone that it didn't split down the center. Or at least, that was how it felt. As the kind of fighter who relied on headshots to make short work of her foes, Aegle could certainly appreciate that she'd allowed one too many blows to strike in the vicinity of her head. Running was an even greater chore than usual, and it was all she could do to keep herself upright through the disconnected dizziness and dullness which wanted to overtake her. While her semblance might have provided some insulation to such debilitation, that would have burnt through her dwindling aura with even greater alacrity. Which was to say nothing of the other effects straining herself like that might have. As much as Aegle wanted to win, it wasn't worth risking it. Not yet.
Lily lead her a merry chase around the perimeter of their arena, Lily as fast as flowing water and Aegle implacable as a steam engine, spreading out their audience in their wake. Aegle was just starting to worry that Lily was trying to tire her out, and redoubled her efforts to catch up. However their fight resolved, Aegle couldn't let Lily lose in such a fashion. Then, in a move that greatly relieved the tailing pugilist, Lily turned upon her. It took only a split second, barely enough time for Aegle's grin to reform on her lips, but her delight was plain on her honest face. Nothing could have made her happier than her newest friend running at her, full speed, with every intention of causing her physical harm. It was a good moment to be alive.
Though it turned out that Lily had not been moving full speed after all. Whether this fact ever became apparent to Aegle, in the split second before impact, is unclear, for she certainly couldn't have said afterwards. Just as she had been raising her hands, preparing to put a run-by punch in the center of Lily's face, the faunus girl in question did something which Aegle really should have expected. And while Aegle almost certainly felt the impact in some capacity, she couldn't have described it if she tried. With a sound like a baseball bat striking a melon, Lily's leaping knee caught Aegle full in the face. Fast as she was, the orange haired girl simply was not equipped to dodge such a frightfully fast attack, not when even those watching didn't see precisely what had happened. The blow whipped her head back, and her body went stiff then limp in rapid succession. Before Lily had even touched ground, Aegle had fallen bodily into it. Her impact was surprisingly understated, given the shocking blow which had caused it. With most of her momentum absorbed upon colliding with Lily's knee, she basically just took one last step before flopping flat on her face, eyes glazed and hands at her sides.
Not for the first time that match, Aegle made those watching wonder if she would actually get back up. Those who'd seen Lily's previous attempts to put the smaller girl down might have had some reservations but, following such a brutal blow, none could fault Aegle for staying down. Least of all those who'd been closest, and who'd sensed little change in the aura of the orange haired girl. Just like every hit before, it seemed evident that Aegle had exerted very little energy to guard against it. Those who'd been paying attention, though, would notice that the faint glow surrounding Aegle's head, while it had flickered, had not gone out. The first sign to the others watching that Aegle was not yet done, was a short and quiet cough that came from her prone form.
"Ooooh..." The small girl groaned as she stirred, slowly lifting herself off the ground. She got onto all fours with her head still bowed, and hacked quietly once again, then struggled unsteadily onto her feet. She swayed forward, away from Lily, for a couple of steps, then came to an uneasy halt and double over with the effort. Looking for all like a mishandled marionette, she hung like that for a couple of seconds, nearly bent all the way over with her arms hanging down limply before her. Somehow, she didn't fall over. Had it been a real fight and not a sparring match between friends, then right then doubtlessly would have been where it ended. Despite displaying phenomenal fortitude in that she was not utterly unconscious, Aegle was plainly in no shape to go on defending herself.
"Thaaat..." Aegle slurred, loudly enough to be heard, "Waas a good one."
Suddenly and jerkily pulling herself back upright, she scanned the shocked faces standing before her with as much perception as she presently possessed. It was not a lot. Not seeing Lily, she stumbled indelicately in place and blinked hard to clear the stars from her eyes.
"Lookit all the people..." She mumbled quietly, barely keeping her feet, as her one emerald eye scanned the crowd. "Didja all come out t'watch me fight?" The crowd didn't answer, and it was clear few among them had any real idea what they were looking at. In the world of huntresses and huntsman, fights tended to end when a combatant ran out of aura, not where they were too banged up to go on fighting. Aegle was probably the first student most had seen punch-drunk since they got out of eighth year.
"S'awful nice of ya..." still smiling, Aegle passed her green gaze over the crowd, looking at everything and seeing nothing. The other eye, it became clear as she turned the rest of the way around, had been swollen entirely shut.
"Oh, Hey Lily..." Focusing for the first time, Aegle's sole remaining eye fixated on her faunus friend even while her head lulled weakly back and forth upon her shoulders. "Didja see all the people? They came t'watch us fight." Her lips curled in a lopsided grin and broadcast serene pleasure out from the bruised ruin of her face. Then, abruptly, Aegle's expression became solemn and stern, and the hazy glow surrounding her flickered slightly.
"Oh... We're still fightin', aint we?" She asked before she shakily raised her hands and pulled both into loose fists.
"Alright, m'ready..." Aegle mumbled, her unfocused emerald eye narrowing, "Put 'em up, shhhhow me whatcha got." Next, she took a single step towards Lily, the glow of her aura flickered again, and she dropped to one knee. Something that might have been recognition flashed across her face, and she struggled slowly back up, swayed for just a second, and finally looked into Lily's eyes once again. Her expression was almost apologetic.
"Oh," She said, barely whispering the word, then finally a softer, "Dang..." before the glow surrounding her vanished entirely. Immediately, Aegle's legs gave out and she collapsed heavily to her knees, her hands limp at her sides. For a moment, she tried vainly to stand back up but she hadn't the focus to will her weakened body back into motion. At last, Aegle simply slouched forward and quietly lost her battle for consciousness. All the tension, all the fight, seemed to drain out of her, and she rested peacefully with her head bowed and her shoulders slumped, with only her slow breathing to disturb her stillness.
