Aegle Epione Vitus |
★ APPEARANCE
Aegle stands just over five feet tall, and weighs just a little over ninety pounds. Her small size, which she exaggerates with a perpetual slouch, is her most immediately apparent trait, though it has a close second in her usually elaborately styled hair. Though she changes hair styles as often as the hair growth will allow, her present hair style is a long mohawk which she has dyed a rather obnoxious shade of orange. Her natural hair colour is dark brown. Her skin is an almost sickly pale that makes her often rosie cheeks and startlingly green eyes stand out that much more.
She is almost always smiling.
Beside to her size and her outrageous hair, the next thing that will probably be apparent, assuming it is not hidden beneath her clothes, is the full body exoskeleton which Aegle wears at all times. This exoskeleton is made up of numerous padded metal bands on all her major points of articulation, which are interconnected by small metal rods and braces. Aegle usually wears uncomplicated and often well worn clothing beneath her exoskeleton, which she then covers up with baggier outerwear. She has a fondness for vibrant Orange and deep reds, and a lot of her outfits incorporate those colours, and has a somewhat punkish fashion sense.
★ PERSONALITY
★ HISTORY
When Andes and Rhea Vitus welcomed their fourth child and only daughter into the world, they already had great aspirations for her. Andes, an engineer of moderate acclaim, had worked for years in research and development of some of Legion's many mechanical and scientific marvels. He had never personally revolutionized the field of complex mechanics, which was his foremost specialty, but he enjoyed a reputation as a reliable and ingenious problem solver. Never one to invent something wholly new and world changing, Andes instead managed to improve existing concepts or conceive whole new uses for existing technology. There were no successes which he might take personal and sole credit for, but he had been part of many a team which had engineered new solutions to old problems or brought antiquated technology into the modern era. In short, he was a valued but easily overlooked cog in an absolutely massive machine. Rhea, conversely, was a scientist with a passion for medicine, but was about as remarkable in her field as her husband in his. As a researcher, she had conceptualized and tested many small hypotheses which, while of little value on their own, had sometimes come to form the foundation for larger breakthroughs made by more ingenious or visionary members of the scientific community. Aegle's eldest brother, Vulcan, pursued a career in robotics following his graduation from Vytal academy. He was gifted in ways his father was not and had, following his graduation, produced a handful of small advances for use in Legion's increasingly mechanized military. As a result, he'd also earned himself limited, but not undue, acclaim in his field before Aegle was even born. Her second oldest brother, Aaron, was in many ways born to be a soldier. His effortless athleticism and strong sense of duty made up for his somewhat lackluster academia. When Aegle was born, Aaron had just recently enlisted and begun training with aspirations of one day becoming a Specialist in Legion's military. Paeon, who was ten when Aegle's was born, showed a far greater inclination towards academics than either of his brothers. Though he was also less physically inclined than Vulcan or Aaron, his keen intellect and hunger for knowledge were already apparent, and it seemed all but certain that he would excel in whichever field of scientific inquiry he inevitably chose to pursue.
It is important to describe both Aegle's parents, a pair of valuable but otherwise average members in their respective fields, and her three brothers, all of whom found their passion at an early age and seemed destined to excel in their chosen vocations, to understand precisely what environment Aegle was born into. Of equal importance to her conception, both literally and figuratively, is the fact that Aegle's parents never intended to have a fourth child, and that she was born nearly a decade after their previous child. Andes and Rhea were nothing if not proud of their sons and, with such a pedigree, they fully expected their happy accident to follow in their footsteps. So it came to be that from the first moment that she could understand such concepts as aspiration and ambition, Aegle was taught one very specific thing. She could do anything, anything at all, if she just set her mind to it. And where such an assertion would have been little more than the well meaning but ultimately fallacious assurance of a doting parent, in Aegle's case, her brothers could be held up as examples.
For the first few years of Aegle's life, she was a much loved handful for her parents. While seemingly absent of the usual inexperienced malignancy which so often plagues those still in their formative years, Aegle was an exuberant font of energy and excitement. With the idea that she could be whatever she wanted thoroughly ingrained in her, Aegle couldn't wait to experience the world and learn what special thing she would find a passion for. The future was bright and limitless, and yet, as is so often the case, the future can also bring the unexpected. In Aegle's case, the unexpected made itself apparent shortly before she turned six. With Vulcan designing some of Legion's most advanced automated soldiers, Aaron already a commissioned officer in the her military, and Paeon looking forward to his admittance final years at Vytal academy, Aegle's parents noticed in their daughter that something wasn't quite right. She had developed a slouch and grown increasingly pigeon toed, while her worsening clumsiness had reduced her to a state of coordination on par with someone half her age. What was more, her usually boundless energy wasn't able to overcome the perpetual weariness and weakness that began to plague her, which made even the simplest tasks difficult or impossible. It wasn't long before the cause was discovered, and Aegle's parents learned that their daughter had been born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, characterized by a degeneration of musculature, skeletal disfigurement, and a considerably shortened life expectancy. In fact, it was discovered at the same time that Aegle's worsening lethargy and apparent anemia were both due to the early onset of cardiac atrophy. There was no cure for Aegle's condition at the time, and what treatments there were treated only the symptoms and not the root, genetic cause.
For the next four years, Aegle's life came to revolve around the treatment of her ever worsening condition. With the world's most advanced medicine at their disposal, Rhea and Andes forestalled the worst of their daughter's symptoms, and precious years were added onto Aegle's life. Unsurprisingly, this period was difficult for all involved. It looked to Rhea and Andes like their unexpected fourth child wouldn't live long enough to realize any of the aspirations they'd once had for her. As the pair watched Aegle endure all manner of surgeries and invasive procedures, Aegle, as the looming threat of death continued to hang over her, came to understand her own mortality in a way few children could. And as she grew weaker and the means of treating her grew more intensive, even the small efforts to forestall the development of the disorder began to fail. Before she was ten years old, Aegle could barely sit up without some kind of assistance and was bound to a wheel chair.
The difficulty of living with Aegle's condition, for both Aegle and her parents, was eased somewhat by the efforts of her brothers, whom grew quite close to their sister despite the considerable age gap that separated them. Paeon who, after years of watching Aegle whittled away by a disease nobody could cure, had pursued a career in medicine and served as something of an adviser to his little sister, explaining the various treatments she underwent in terms she could understand. Aaron, while unable to physically present for his sister, due to his distant postings and budding military career, maintained a close correspondence with both Aegle and their parent's. While seemingly minor, the emotional support and, especially in Aegle's case, encouragement which Aaron provided can not be discredited. Aegle's eldest brother, whose aptitude for robotics had well acquainted him with the power armour used by select units in the army, constructed a small mechanized brace for his sister when even lifting her arms became too tiring for her. Utilizing a series of small motors, Vulcan's brace assisted Aegle with basic movements by effectively doing the work her atrophying muscles could not. Though, much like every other effort, the brace was just another attempt to forestall the inevitable.
Medicine, however, is always moving forward and, when Aegle was eleven, a revolutionary new procedure was developed which had the potential to cure genetic disorders such as her congenital dystrophy. The procedure was both invasive and untested, and posed a considerable risk to Aegle's already frail constitution. It was entirely likely that, if it did not arrest the development of her disorder, it would simply kill her. Of course, Aegle wasn't initially aware of this treatment. It's discovery and the suggestion of its use were kept from her by her parents and doctors, all of whom harbored concerns for the risks it posed. No efforts were made to keep the procedure's potentially life altering effects from Aegle's brothers, however. Paeon in particular was quite familiar with the greater advances made in his field. He confronted his parents and brothers with knowledge of the procedure and the fact that it might be able to save Aegle's life. The five of them argued over the worth of subjecting Aegle to a treatment which, though it may partially lengthened life, might also result in her death. Vulcan and Rhea both considered the risk far too high. For them, it was better to let her have what time she had left than to bet it all on a double or nothing wager. Andes and Aaron believed that the procedure was well worth the danger, and that whatever risks were necessary to prolong Aegle's life needed to be taken. Paeon, whose drive to study medicine was born primarily from spending his youth watching his sister get sicker and sicker, could not decide. So instead, he suggested that Aegle be allowed to decide for herself. So it came to be that, before she was even a teenager, Aegle was given the ultimate choice: Would she undergo an untested and potentially lethal procedure that would have, at best, uncertain results? She made her decision in less time than it had taken any of her family members to even decide which side of the issue they were on, and she was signed up for the trial.
As expected, the procedure was hard on Aegle. The progress of her condition had weakened her heart as well as her body, and recovering from the initial, minor surgeries was a challenge for her. What was more, the true effect of the procedure, which aimed to correct anomalies on the genetic level, were incredibly unpleasant. Experimental drugs that were just a little less deadly than actual poison were pumped into Aegle, while nerves that had atrophied along with her muscles began to work once again. Her life became a cycle of overwhelming agony and sensitivity broken up by brief periods exhausted unconsciousness. Yet, whenever she was asked if she would like to give up on the treatments Aegle, even at her weakest, always refused. So she endured and, as the procedures grew more exhaustive and intensive, so too did the certainty that they would eventually kill her. Except they never actually did. Though Aegle struggled and flagged following each stage of her treatment, she always managed to recover and, though her determination sometimes wavered, she never once gave up the will to keep going.
After almost two years and against all odds, Aegle was cured. There was little which could be done to fix the damage her condition had caused and there was no telling what permanent harm the excruciating procedure had caused, but Aegle was cured. For the first time in half her life, Aegle had a future to look forward to and the opportunity to do all the things she'd always wanted to do. She could discover her passion, develop her skills, see the world and actually live again. So, before she was truly well enough to even leave the hospital, Aegle decided on her course. She was going to be a huntress. She could not walk, was barely capable of lifting her own head, and had just endured a treatment everyone was sure should have killed her, and she was going to be a huntress.
So Aegle started down the long road to recovery. She returned to school for the first time since she was ten, and began physio-therapy. She was not a gifted student the way her brothers Vulcan and Paeon had been, but she studied hard. Aegle had never been smart, but her determination to make something of herself overcame her evident deficit of intelligence, and she did passably well without ever really excelling at anything. The more rigorous aspects of schooling were closed to her, as she lacked the physical strength to move unassisted, yet even in these areas, her drive for self improvement was evident. Her first true goals became overcoming her inability to walk and doing well enough in school to qualify for huntress training. She worked hard to strengthen muscles that had been atrophied by years of disease and disuse, while at the same time learning as much as she could to overcome her lack of innate intelligence. She tried to teach herself how to use her aura, studied for hours at a time, and relearned how to use her legs. She challenged herself by taking off the brace her brother had made for her and used her arms unassisted. Her efforts were exhausting, but they eventually bore fruit. A year after being cured, Aegle was able to perform most minor tasks, such as writing and feeding herself, without the assistance of Vulcan's brace. At the same time, she had greatly improved her academics and, while it was obvious she would never be top of her class, sometimes managed to break just above the average. Only her efforts to walk seemed truly fruitless for, even though she was able to move her legs again, it did not seem they would ever be strong enough to support her weight. It was in the use of her aura that Aegle exceeded. As though it were fueled by her perseverant nature and inherent determination, she was able to control it in ways which students two years older could not.
By her second year, Aegle could manage more complex tasks, such as dressing herself, without assistance. She adopted more grueling regimens of study and practice: When she was too tired to train herself, she would study and when she was too exhausted to study, she would tap into her aura just so she could go a little longer. After two years, while certainly not the brightest, she was recognized as one of the most hardworking and reliable students in her school, who never once missed a day or handed in an assignment late. She also pushed to be allowed to practice hunters arts with the other students and showed proficiency in both weapon maintenance and design, as well as aura manipulation. In fact, with the help of Vulcan's brace, and despite being bound to a wheel chair, Aegle was even a little quicker and more more endurant than some of her able bodied peers. Despite her efforts however, Aegle could still not walk.
On her fifteenth birthday, Aegle was gifted a new brace by Vulcan which was not simply a shoulder spanning rig. This new design was a fully articulated exoskeleton that made several improvements on the original: It was sturdy enough to be struck in combat, its design allowed for easy engagement and removal, its motors were faster and more responsive, and, perhaps most importantly, it allowed Aegle to take her first step in five years. The following year, Aegle was one of the better combatants in her class. She had a brazenly confident and a utterly fearless technique which few of her peers could match. Preferring weaponry that didn't require a great deal of coordination, she discovered an affinity for shields and other very close quarters weapons, and tended take risks that caught others by surprise. This was also the year that, with the help of her eldest brother, Aegle began designing the first iteration of the Oupis, which would become her preferred weapon. Based on the same design as her exoskeleton, and actually capable of integrating with it, the Oupis would allow her to far exceed her own physical limitations, making her faster and stronger. It was also around this time that Aegle first learned what her semblance was, and that she may have been unconsciously making use of it for most of her life.
At sixteen, Aegle used her Oupis, initially equipped with only a shield and a pair of heavy fists, to become one of the best combatants in her class. Her strength and endurance, both enhanced by the Oupis, were almost unparalleled, and her drive to be the best, no matter the risks, often times made up the difference. Which is how a girl of a little less than average intelligence, who had been unable to walk for almost half her life, began her training as a huntress. Her drive and determination are her greatest strengths and, as she as she takes her first steps on the road to becoming a huntress, Aegle has nothing but confidence for the future.

★ COMBAT NOTES
WEAPONS
The Oupis is the name Aegle has given to her personally designed combat rig. Less a weapon and more a combat suit, the Oupis is characterised by two armatures, about six inches at their widest, originating from the heavy batter and circuitry pack supported upon her back and shoulders, which then extend down the outside bend of Aegle's arms. Each armature ends in a lobstered metal gauntlet made up of numerous large and heavy interlocking plates and fittingly resemble pincers. Continuing down Aegle's back, The Oupis forms a spinal brace from her shoulders down to her hips which is about six inches wide and three inches thick. From her hips, the Oupis continues down the outside of Aegle's legs before ending in heavy, piston assisted greaves that end just below Aegle's knees. It is clear from a glance that the Oupis is not intended to provide more than the most necessary protection, given that it leaves large portions of Aegle's arms, legs, and torso exposed, as well as her head. Only her hands, feet, and the outside of her legs are actually protected to any real degree. Instead, the Oupis is intended to provide mechanical assistance to all of Aegle's actions, and responds almost immediately to even her tiniest movements. It actually resembles a piece of construction equipment much more than a hunter's weapon, a fact which Aegle gleefully exacerbated by covering the whole thing with yellow and black danger stripes. When in shield mode, the black and yellow plates that make up the claws also arrange themselves to give the shield a danger stripe paint job. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the Oupis' paint is chipped or scratched.
The claws give her a grip strong enough to, with some effort, strip the armour off a tank and, when used to punch, can pierce straight through a creature of Grimm with ease. The whole rig also forms a reactive brace which gives Aegle the ability to lift hundreds of pounds over her head and then throw it a dozen yards. By interlocking the plates of metal which make up the rig's claws, Aegle can form a rectangular shield as tall and wide as she is, though doing so leaves which ever hand is not supporting the shield empty and unprotected. The Oupis shield is capable of absorbing or deflecting attacks from most conventional weapons and man sized Grimm, such as Beowolves and Boarbatusks. This is, of course, provided Aegle is quick enough to intercept the blow. Heavier blows, such as those coming from Death Stalker or King Taijitu, can break through the shield with repeated strikes.
The Oupis is powered by thirty lightning dust powercells contained in the large pack Aegle wears on her back. These power cells are mostly stable, but can be primed to detonate, and thus can be used as improvised grenades. This is actually a fairly common tactic that Aegle will employ when forced into using the Oupis in shield mode, as employing the shield leaves one of her hands free. With the Oupis' help, she can throw primed cells a remarkable distance and with such incredible force that they explode on impact. The Oupis, while designed to operate with all thirty cells, is capable of operating effectively with only fifteen, though it does so at a quarter its effective strength.
Rather than deplete the Oupis' limited power supply, Aegle will instead employ the rig's ability to rapidly transition from shield to claw mode to chain blocks and ripostes together, though the shield can also be used to deliver a head rattling bash in a pinch.
The Oupis can be transformed into a large briefcase for ease of transport or when not in use. Activating it causes it to assume its upright form, and allows Aegle to equip it simply by stepping back into the open greaves and sliding her hands into the wrist braces at the end of the armatures.
MISC.
-The Brace: Aegle is almost never seen without her brace, a full body, articulated and low profile exoskeleton. The brace is incapable of any exceptional feats beyond its primary function, which is allowing Aegle to walk and move like a normal person. Silver loops, padded for comfort, wrap around Aegle at all major points of articulation, including her shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees and ankles. These loops are connected by narrow metal rods that travel along the outside bends of her arms, down the middle of her back and the outside of her legs, and are all eventually connected to the silver pack that spans her shoulders and supports her neck. The Brace whirs softly with each movement.
-Spare Batteries: Aegle usually caries a few extra dust batteries with her. These smaller batteries are intended for the brace, and do not have the same explosive properties as those which power the Oupis. Due to the Oupis' specific cells and their explosive tendency, it is unwise for her to carry spares of those...
-Punch Plates: The bulkiness of the Oupis often makes it infeasible for Aegle to carry it about with her. In cases where she needs to defend herself but does not have access to her combat rig, she makes use of knuckle protecting punch plates instead. As a trained boxer, she can put the plates to proficient use, even while lacking the Oupis' destructive stopping power.
Aegle's aura manifests as a burning orange glow which radiates out from her shoulders and chest like wisps of steam, though its rarely actually visible. It gives off a sense of drive and determination, the likes of which might inspire someone to try and achieve the impossible. Much like Aegle herself, her aura is a representation of overcoming challenges and limitations in the most honest and hopeful way. At its strongest, Aegle's aura can embolden others, filling them with hope and resolve and assuring them that anything is possible.
It bears mentioning that Aegle exerts very little energy when it comes to her aura defense, which she treats less as armour and more as added padding. While her aura can protect her from life threatening injuries by muting lethal attacks, lesser attacks can easily slip through and cause her physical harm. This is not an oversight by Aegle, but rather the intended purpose of her defenses. Aegle simply believes her energy is better spent bolstering her attacks or powering her semblance, rather than protecting her from harm.

Determination
Much like her aura, Aegle's semblance is a straight forward reflection of who she is, and its primary function is to exceed boundaries and limitations. By drawing on her strength of will and determination, Aegle can drive herself and those around her to accomplish the impossible. Weapons become sharper, armour becomes harder, dust bursts with greater force and effect, while injuries seem less painful and weariness less debilitating. The effects of Aegle's semblance are most pronounced upon herself, but she has the limited ability to spread its influence to others at the cost of reducing its over all effect. There's no limit to how many people she can affect, but the overall radius of her semblance is quite limited and diminishes the further away from her one gets. This limitation requires someone to be within at least ten feet of her to gain any noticeable benefit, while standing almost abreast to her results in the strongest boon.
Aegle's semblance is special in that it can affect objects as well as people. When focused onto herself, she can use her semblance to make her Oupis stronger to the point of being practically indestructible, while at the same time allowing herself to practically ignore all but the most grievous of injuries and exhaustion. When spread out, weapons feel lighter and more comfortable in their owner's hands, and are able to strike with greater accuracy and rapidity than usual without receiving any wear and tear. Those affected by the aura become bolder and more confident and are able to ignore weariness and minor injuries. It also becomes very difficult to intimidate those effected by Aegle's semblance.
Remaining true to its user, Aegle's semblance is not without risk. Prolonged use of her semblance not only exhausts her aura at a rapid rate, but makes her prone to over exertion. Being that Aegle is neither physically strong nor particularly robust, over exerting herself in such a fashion can have severe, possibly even lethal consequences. While it allows her to ignore her exhaustion, she doesn't actually become any less tired, nor does she grow tired at a diminished rate. Instead, her exhaustion builds and builds until either her aura is exhausted or it becomes too much for her semblance to insulate her from, and she loses consciousness. Additionally, her heart simply can not handle going for extended periods without rest, and her body, weak as it is, can not endure extended activity while badly hurt. She does, to some small effect, use both her aura and her semblance to insulate herself against the incredible frailty of her body, but her semblance also allows her to exert herself to a disastrous degree. This risk is spread to those affected by her semblance too, as they become less conscious of their own weaknesses and shortcomings, making them more prone to dangerous risks and over exerting themselves as well. This is because, again, while her semblance allows others to ignore weariness to a certain degree, it does not remove that weariness nor can it substitute for actual rest. People without as much experience with Aegle's semblance as she has might also drive themselves into actual unconsciousness through over exertion. This risk is especially prevalent when those who have been under the effect of Aegle's semblance for a prolonged period of time are suddenly removed from it, either because she has drawn its effect back in upon herself or because they have moved too far away from her. Those who have ignored their weariness run the real risk of simply collapsing when deprived of her semblance's bolstering effects.
Aegle's aura control is particularly strong, and allows her semblance to overcome small debilitations like headaches and general weariness for an extended period of time without exhausting itself. More strenuous use, such as ignoring a painful but otherwise minor injury, can be maintained for about half an hour at a time. Anything more intensive drains her at a very rapid rate, including spreading her semblance's effect to others, and she can only maintain it for ten minutes before fully exhausting her aura. The most incredible feats of her semblance, such as combating complete exhaustion, keeping something from breaking under devastating and repeated impacts, or ignoring a life threatening wound, can be maintained for five minutes at most, and to do so also puts Aegle at great risk of causing herself grievous injury.
Aegle passively uses her semblance nearly constantly, but can amplify its effects to ignore increasing amounts of pain and debilitation, though the drain on her aura grows exponentially the more she tries to ignore. The ap drain is listed below.
Small debilitations such as soreness and general fatigue: 1 ap per hour (can be sustained almost indefinitely)
Minor injuries such as slight burns, small cuts and muscle strain: 3 ap per minute
Grievous but nonlethal wounds and debilitating pain: 10 ap per minute
Life threatening wounds and mortal agony: 20 ap per minute
Projecting the effects of her aura incurs an additional drain of 10 ap per minute.
