Professor Von Bern surveyed the gathered faces critically, one eye half narrowed in scrutiny while the other bulged with an unspoken hint of authority and menace, cowing the assembly in the way only a seasoned combat veteran could. In one hand he clutched a pair of leather gloves, the rhythmic swat of which on his naked palm served as the only sound in the assembly hall. Though not a big man, he somehow managed to make the reinforced platform on which he stood, close to ten meters squared, look small and confining, as if he might outgrow it at any moment. In the same way, though standing below the students seated before and above him, he seemed to loom high over them. " Ground!" He said suddenly, his strong whipcrack of a voice shocking a small number of students to sudden attention throughout the hall. " Ground!" He repeated, sweeping the blank concrete at his back with a slash of his gloveless hand, " It is not simply the thing on which we all stand." Speaking each word clearly, unmistakable even in his abnormal Legion accent, with all the precision of a timepiece, he turned and marched formally to the far edge of the platform. " Not simply the thing on which you fight." He swept the faces at that side of the auditorium, in their stepped seats above him, then pivoted on his heels and marched all the way to the other side to do the same, " Ground is an idea, and a powerful idea at that!" Pointing suddenly, his finger briefly indistinguishable from a spearhead, Von Bern shocked a quiet squeak from one of the students in the lowest row of seats. " Keep your ear to the ground!" He snapped at her, causing her to fumble her weapons, a pair of matching knives, in the process. " Take the high ground!" He indicated another, more prepared student in the row above and to the left, then turned sharply and pointed directly a certain wolf eared faunus at nearly the opposite end of the room. His bristly mustache twitched beneath his hatchet nose, as if he could smell something and didn't like the scent, and he marched quickly towards Shio, stopping when he reached the middle of the platform. " Stand your ground!" His watery eyes left the faunus girl and swept the room and its inhabitants once more, as he once again slapped his leather gloves authoritatively against his palm. " The creatures of Grimm are diverse and destructive." He told his students bluffly, and even his quieter speaking voice managed to carry to all of them. " And there will be times, as Huntsman, that you will be required to hold your ground against them..." " Perhaps you are covering a retreat, perhaps you are protecting civilians in their homes, perhaps you simply have nowhere left to run. Whatever the reason, you must not be displaced. You Must Stand Your Ground." Punctuating his final five words with a slap from his gloves, the professor let his final point hang for a few moments, before finally taking his eyes off of the gathered students to look at his age worn hands. " You are all here because you specialize at combat in close quarters." He said, voice at a more normal volume once more. " For some, this means you are faster and more nimble than your peers, for others it means you are tougher and stronger..." Having slipped on his gloves, Von Bern crossed his arms behind his back and looked critically over the gathered students once more. Did his gaze linger on Shio a second time? It was hard to say, given that everyone who met his gaze felt he had looked on them for just a little too long. " In either case, defense is not something for which any of you are suited. For all of you, your talents lie in attacking." Pausing, Von Bern surveyed his students once more, and heard no protest to his words. Most of them had chosen to be in this class, their decision predicated on the fact that they were offensive fighters and Von Bern was one of the Academies most accomplished close combat specialists. Indeed, most of them were actually quite proud of their specialty for attack over defense. " Unfortunately, we are not always afforded situations to which we are best suited. As huntsman, you will sometimes be required to fulfill a role for which your training, specialty and equipment render you ill suited. This upcoming week will focus on situations that put you at a disadvantage, and methods for mitigating such disadvantages. You will learn to be adaptable and to deal with circumstances for which your particular skills and abilities are not ideal." Again, Von Bern paused to let his students catch up, all the while scouring their ranks with his unblinking blue eyes. When he was satisfied, he gave a nod and continued as if he'd never stopped talking. " Today's exercises will be quite simple." He explained, " This will be your ground," the wiry professor gestured precisely at the raised platform on which he stood, " And you will stand it. You will not leave it. You will defend it. And you will watch your classmates do the same. Take note of their tactics and their methods, what works and what does not, and try to understand why." From his explanation, it quickly dawned on a handful of students that their opponent would be a common one, as well as the fact that whomever went first would be at a decided disadvantage, forced to tackle the problem without any prior knowledge. A few even wondered if it would be the professor himself who would challenge those on the platform. It wasn't unprecedented for Professors to challenge their students personally, after all. " Shio Kyrou!" Von Bern snapped sharply, bringing a momentary pause to the room's silent speculation, " Since you have proven ever eager to engage with unknown opponents, you will be the first to stand your ground." His eyes had snapped right to the faunus girl, and with them rose the nearly inaudible murmuring of the auditorium's remaining students. Few, if any in the whole hall, were unaware to what the professor was referring, though some might have been a bit scant on the details. The story that Shio had hospitalized a fellow student, and done so unprovoked, was fairly fresh in the minds of the first year student body. Those who knew the name of that student were few and farther between, and, of those few, only a handful actually knew who she was, but just about everyone had heard about how savage the beating had actually been. At once, the whole tone in the auditorium had shifted from a professor giving a lecture, to a judge meting out a sentence. If Von Bern was actually going to be their challenger, and Shio his first opposition, it seemed as though he might intend a very different lesson than the one he'd just described. As one, every head in the auditorium turned to regard the lupine faunus, even those who didn't know her by sight only needing to follow the Professor's watery gaze. " Take up position in the center." Von Bern instructed as he waited for his student to join him on the platform. " Once the exercise begins, you will not step foot out of the arena. If you do so or become unable to fight, the exercise will be concluded and your performance judged." His voice had drawn a few eyes back from the azure faunus, and to those he added, " Not all situations are winnable, but we may require us to fight all the same. Always remember, as much can be learned from a defeat as any victory." And with that, Professor Von Bern dismounted the platform and waited on Shio's compliance.
Heidi's lip curled as she listened to the geriatric's speech, practically unchanged from when he'd given it a year before to her own class, inspiring as much contempt now as it had back then. He'd made her go first too, just like he was doing with this faunus girl, and then put her up against another student rather than fighting her himself. It had been a move both laughable and insulting, especially after his parting comment about 'unwinnable' fights, like she couldn't easily crush anyone in the school, let alone a huntress in training like herself. They had both been armed, of course. She with Orthus and her opponent, a mousy haired sophomore whose name she couldn't remember, with a combination rapier and pistol. The fight had gone precisely how everyone expected it to, with Heidi swatting her challenger out of the arena after a couple of exchanges. Then the little wretch had started to cheat. She couldn't fight Heidi head on with her pathetic little tooth-pick of a weapon, so she'd hung at the perimeter firing shot after shot of fire dust instead. It had been infuriating, all the more so because, every time Heidi moved to engage, her opponent would scamper out of reach and shoot her again. The shots themselves had been insufficient to actually do Heidi any real harm, but they had been irritating and well aimed, with as many striking Heidi in the face as anywhere else on her body. Then the laughter had begun, and Heidi had realized what a fool she was being made to look like, all because the shrimp Von Bern had pitted her again wouldn't stand and fight. She got so angry at one point that she actually threw Orthus, scabbard and all, at the retreating mouse, which left her with nothing to shield her from those infuriating fire shots. It all went downhill after that. Rather than actually try to hurt her, the bitch burnt away Heidi's clothes, thread by thread, until she was stood before the entire class in nothing but her sports bra and half a pair of khaki shorts. It was that final indignity that did it, and Heidi had stormed from the platform to put a final end to her humiliation by snapping her oppressor into kindling. Before she got the chance, however, Von Bern was standing between her and her goal and announcing her defeat. She'd shouted at him, rightfully pointed out that her opponent had been cheating, only to be directed back to her seat like a child, not even permitted to get a change of clothes first. By the end of the day, rather than proving no fight was unwinnable, Heidi hadn't even been among the top five to hold their ground. The humiliation still sat sourly on her tongue, and Heidi indelicately twisted a chunk of wood from the bench on which she sat, then gradually crushed it to splinters between finger and thumb. This time would be different. This time, there wouldn't be any laughter, only fear and respect. She was going to make sure that none of these porcelain dolls spent any more time in the ring than she had a year before. Every one of them was going to learn that there was nothing funny about fighting Heidi Clovis, only pain and the inescapable reality of their own inferiority... Shio Kyrou

"Stand your ground!" Were the first words that Shio would hear, as she woke from a trance, she looked baffled, as if she did not even recognize the surroundings she had been placed in. Truth be told, she had not been listening at all to anything that had been said, neither had she paid any attention to prior events, not until the finger suddenly fell upon her direction and she felt almost forced to listen. At first she appeared mildly surprised, her eyebrows raised just above their average height, amber globes fell inward on the exact point of the teacher's gesture. Then with slight grimace, they ran up the length of the moustached man's hand and arm, until she was staring directly back at him. Her expression remained more placid than most, even though she was glaring at someone of superior status and experience, and she tried to refrain from expressive backlash given her... recent history. So she withheld the dark and menacing features pent-up just behind her mask of cluelessness, up until the instructor averted his gaze. At which point, a deathly air of frustration vented from her entire existence. This was not something that Shio had volunteered for, unlike almost all the other students here, she was scheduled for this lesson as just a small part of a lengthy and grueling punishment. Even being conscious of where she was incited the thought of why, so she had tried to put her mind at rest and forget about it, but clearly, the old shepherd that led this parade of first-year sheep was not going to let her zone out of his lecture so easily. That in mind, the scarfed faunus quietly folded her arms, and listened, regrettably and impatiently. And as she did, her ears flickered uncontrollably, as if fast wind was piercing through them. Shio was not ordinarily a person to be so twitchy and impatient, she was simply practical, and couldn't bear to listen to the obvious preachings of an old man. They were meant to be there for training after all, 'combat in close quarters' as he stated himself, so what was with all the explanation? Why not just get straight to punching each other already? Shio couldn't wrap her head around it. There was also a particular feeling about the topic of the lesson, not one that she could understand, and lingered at the back of her mind, that invoked irritation and unease in the young lupine faunus. Overall deciding it was better off to ignore it, Von Bern finally came around to the actual explanation of their session. 'About time', was the thought that crossed her mind - as she honed in on his voice to offer her genuine attention and curiosity. From there everything they were to do was outlined clearly and precisely, and Shio, despite earlier despising everything about the situation she was in, felt a smirk creep up on the upper corner of her brandished lips. Then, assuming it had been planned from the start, her name was called out almost immediately, accompanied by an electrifying thrill sent shuddering down her spine. Most of the class put her under scrutiny - whispering their opinions between themselves - but the idea of being put under the spotlight and the call-out to her past encounter with Aegle did not nearly outweigh to thwart the excitement she felt. If anything, it only provoked and sparked her inner fire even more. Shio shot her narrow and fierce eyes right back at Von Bern, the evil grin on her face cautiously growing piece by piece. The brawler was instructed to step up to the arena, and in advance to his continuation Shio had already begun to move. Lowering both her arms to either side, she forced a path through the crowd of other students with steely clenched fists, whilst some of them were unnerved to move out of her way. Their whispers were not anonymous to her, as she could hear the majority of their slander with acute hearing, but it all meant nothing in comparison to what the grizzled hunter laced under his choice words. Shio did not fail to notice the implications of what he said, and with it her eyes widened with wildness and her grin opened up to reveal a set of fully braced fangs teeming with malign eagerness, words stumbled out of her mouth almost without voice - bordering on a low-pitched growl. ' Don't get smug with me, old man...' Stepping up and onto the platform Shio was disappointed to see Von Bern leave, she would have been happy to kick him down a notch. But nonetheless the girl still looked feverishly ready for a fight. With her final steel-clad steps putting her in the center of the stage, a baleful amber glance swept the crowd with enthusiasm. Shio did not feel the least bit sorry for which one of them it was, and she definitely wasn't going to be pulling any punches. With that same ill-natured and bestial attitude she called out to everyone, not excluding the class instructor. "So, who am I fighting?"

Heidi watched through narrowed eyes as her first victim descended to the stage, indolent and bored by Von Bern and his theatrics. That he was trying to make a point with this faunus girl the same way he'd made a point with her was not something lost on the golden eyed girl. The idea rankled her, and not simply because it showed that Von Bern saw Heidi as no different than the students that had come before or since her. It was the idea that she'd fallen prey to a ploy he likely used every year, picking out some unfortunate student to make the butt of his joyless joke. Heidi had earned her place at the front of the line through equal parts belligerence and disinterest, after being forced to take Von Bern's class as an 'outlet for her aggression'. Aggression she'd previously focused on the abundant supply of inferior cretins she was forced to share the school with. She might have wondered what this faunus girl did to be at the head of Von Bern's queue, but the truth was that she didn't really care. What ever her perceived crime, Heidi was there for one reason, and one reason alone; To make sure she knew how small and weak she really was. And Heidi was just the person to teach her. That, in doing so, Heidi would also be doing Von Bern's dirty work, and treating this girl to the same humiliation she'd suffered herself a year prior, did precious little to trouble the hunched over huntress. Not once did it occur to her that the mousy haired sophomore who'd dealt Heidi her own embarrassment, may have been the first in line when she was a freshman too. The faunus was a stranger, both to her and to Jackie, and not one whose appearance promised much. She was probably about average in size, maybe even a little bigger, but everyone and everything seemed small to Heidi. She carried no weapon, which made her either a dust specialist or a brawler. Heidi found herself hoping for the latter, if only to avoid being left next to naked at the end of the first fight. She carried herself with impertinent confidence, like she couldn't imagine anything strong enough to dethrone her, but Heidi had seen that very same expression many times before. Everyone thought they were strong, until they fought her. Von Bern had moved to his spot near the first layer of seating. The same spot, Heidi noted with some irritation, that he'd watched her fight from. " So, who am I fighting?" the faunus, Heidi had already forgotten her name, asked eagerly. Heidi was, again, irritated to note that she'd asked the same thing when she'd stood in the wolf girl's place. Gritting her teeth, her golden eyes flicked to Von Bern, and found his watery blues staring right back at her. As if he'd expected the glance. Was that a smile under his absurdity of a mustache? Surely not. "Since the whole point of this exercise is to fight a losing battle," The old man answered, eyes dismissing Heidi's to look back at the faunus girl, " It would not benefit you to fight one, or even a number of your classmates." Though they would do that too... Heidi knew that well enough. Von Bern had once set half the class on her, after all. " For that reason, I have requisitioned a volunteer to help in this exercise." Heidi grit her teeth, unwilling to let anybody present know she'd had no choice in the matter. Either she acted as Von Bern's assistant in this absurd little exercise of his, or he dropped her from his course. And, for as much as she resented the time and effort Von Bern's course demanded, it was one of the only ways she could beat people up without getting into trouble for it. Standing slowly, without waiting to be introduced, Heidi let the splinters of wood trickle out of her hand and turned to face her first opponent. She was standing at the front of the platform and off to the side, where only those seated on the extreme edge at one side of the auditorium could see her. Catching the movement, a few eyes from that section settled upon her, and Heidi briefly answered them with a gilded glare from her golden eyes. None of them knew her, but at least one shrank down in his seat. " Allow me to introduce Heidi Clovis..." Von Bern said coolly, drawing Heidi's gaze back to the center of the room. And if Shio's off-handed reprimand had stoked a wave of heresay and gossip, Heidi's introduction inspired much the same. Shio had put another student in the infirmary, sure, but she hadn't done it to everyone who looked at her wrong. A satisfied smirk spread across Heidi's lips, glad for the respect and recognition her name afforded her. A smirk that faded the instant Von Bern opened his mouth again. " Miss Clovis failed to stand her ground last year." The snide old fool croaked, silencing the babble in an instant. " Fortunately, her role in this exercise plays much closer to her strengths." Heidi could have popped Von Bern's head like an egg; She could have twisted it right off his shoulders and fed him his body. That damned bastard! Slowly, his blue eyes drifted back to her's, and she once again wondered if he was smiling under his mustache. "You may begin whenever you are ready, Miss Clovis." He said to her, and she was sure she heard a hint of mirth in his tone. " Old f*cking toad." Heidi hissed beneath her breath. It was a wonder she didn't shout it. Probably the only reason she didn't was because that would mean admitting he'd nailed her right in front of the freshman class. Glowering, Heidi returned her gaze to the center of the room and mounted the steps towards the wolf eared faunus waiting for her. And, in so doing, she gave some much needed perspective to those watching. Though Shio might have been above average in height, Heidi was close to a foot taller, such that she towered over every other person present in the hall. She was dressed in a form hugging red and black tank top, leaving her arms and shoulders nearly completely bare, and a pair of blue lycra shorts that ended just above her knees, and that was it. Neither shoes nor gloves, only a headband to hold her long black hair in a pony tail. Her body, on nearly complete display thanks to her clothes, was lean and powerful without being overlarge or bulky. The perfect balance of muscle and curve. She might even have been beautiful, if it hadn't been for the scowl that contorted her otherwise admirable features. She carried Orthus in one hand, the long sword safely stowed in its broad black and gold scabbard, nearly weightless in her grip. The other was empty save for some splinters of wood still clinging to her skin. She lingered at the edge of the platform for a few moments, sizing up her victim while confident that she couldn't be attacked. She wondered what trick this faunus might have under her sleeves. Brawlers and Dust users always had a trick, and it was better to try and guess it than risk embarrassment. Not that Heidi was worried about being embarrassed. Whatever tricks the faunus girl had, they wouldn't save her. Heidi had given up this platform once before, and now she was going to take it back. Without a word, Heidi shrugged Orthus from her shoulder and, with minimal effort, plunged the scabbarded sword a hands breadth into the wooden step between her feet, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that the metal scabbard was evidently blunt. Then, twisting the hilt and yanking the sword free, she swung the great blade skyward and let it unfold, growing wider and longer, till it resembled a gigantic carving knife cast in black iron and gold. Resting the dull edge across her shoulder, Heidi smirked and finished her ascent, stepping onto the platform with all the urgency and concern of one coming home. If cockiness and arrogance were things which could be carried and weighed, Heidi's would have been sufficient to crush the platform on which she stood and half the room alongside. She regarded Shio with such complete contempt that she didn't even step away from the platform's edge, despite how precarious it made her footing. " Tell you what..." She said to the faunus, her voice rich and strong and clear, like a singer's voice had been upscaled to suit her above average size. She was quite enjoying the show she was putting on for all her future opponents, and decided to make things little more dramatic for them all, just so they knew what they were getting into. " I'll give you one hit," Indicating 'one' with her finger, as if she were concerned her opponent might not be following, " And I won't even try to block it. What do you think?" Shio Kyrou

Shio's eyes and her lupine ears flickered at the sound of Von Bern's rough old voice, which managed to make itself clear above the soft murmurs of students encompassing the platform. The faunus looked impatient, bloodthirsty, like a caged animal that had not been fed for a week - as the veteran ran his mouth around the point to which he was soon to arrive at. So it wasn't going to be the class she was fighting? How disappointing, all of the features on her face seemed to lessen until they were near sober. Instead it would be only one opponent, a 'volunteer' as he put it, to which her expression narrowed to reflect her suspicion and offence. Clearly she felt underestimated, to be put against just one person, but the question of who that person was piqued her interest. As if she could not even feel the presence of a many other eyes glaring in her direction, one particular aura of hostility pricked against her skin like a needle to stand out from all the others. Her leering amber globes set upon Von Bern, and followed the course of his eyes. Before Heidi had even been introduced, Shio was already observing her with studious countenance. There was not a doubt in her mind, whilst the teacher announced to confirm it, that she was staring directly at the person to be her opponent. Then he further continued, to state that this character had been tasked with the same situation as she had the previous year, and failed. Shio almost couldn't believe it, as her look was fixated on Heidi, because she could tell just by looking at the way she held herself - she was strong. Or at least believed herself to be, as there was not a single glaring weakness discernible from her stance, though she appeared very irritated to be reminded of her past failure, more so that it had just been made public amongst the gossiping freshman. Heidi cursed the old man quietly, and Shio felt a chuckle of laughter burst out from her lungs - which she hastily stifled. With her keen ears she could hear everything around her, even the quietest hums, and having focused on and heard what Heidi said very clearly, it had surprised her to perceive Heidi say something very close to what she had just moments beforehand. It had caught the faunus brawler's sense of humor off-guard in any case, and she was not ashamed to show it amidst the serious atmosphere. However, urgency returned to her swiftly, as the crashing sound of wood plank filled the room and silenced the crowd. Shio watched Heidi cautiously, whilst her weapon transformed into something much larger and menacing. It was no surprise to the faunus that her weapon had another form, it was very commonplace for hunters and huntresses to wield trick-weapons, what almost startled her was the ease with which Heidi swung her massive weapon. That was enough to tell her that her suspicions had been correct - this person was someone who relied on her strength, similar to herself. And although this thought passed her mind, it slipped by instantly, as Shio realized that she was being not just simply glared at, but looked down upon. " Tell you what...", Shio listened with scorn, rage building up and twisting every feature on her face. " I'll give you one hit,", the faunus strained every muscle down the length of her arms, right down to the fists that clasped at themselves with resentment. " And I won't even try to block it. What do you think?" ... "What do I think?..." Without warning a blazing inferno erupted from every inch of Shio, immersing her within an azure glow of destructive energy. Ripples of air sped away from her at an alarming rate, to which even the front row of audience had to reaffirm their footing so they did not trip over each other. The covered arms of the scarfed faunus did not show it, but they had hardened and laboured themselves to match the toughness of her steel-plated knuckles, and trembled with the outrage she felt. As did every fiber of her being turn rigid, whilst her sapphire imbued eyes pierced right through the wildfire and scowled with disdain at Heidi. Shio was aware that this could be a ploy of some sort, as her instincts told her that there was no such thing as a free hit in a fight. Even so, she was not about to stand and be disrespected. The faunus took one inflexible step after another, each rotation bringing her even closer to Heidi, the very platform she stood on creaked loudly with every marching pace she made. The raw buffer of aura roared audibly with the shrieking gale that enveloped it. Up until she was a mere few strides away from Heidi, Shio hauled her condensed right arm behind her, and the timber under her feet detonated on the press of her left foot. It was as though Shio had teleported away from sight and appeared directly before her, in comparison to how slowly she had approached. The wall of aura that accompanied Shio had dissipated in an instant, leaving behind embers scattered everywhere, every bit of destructive aura now seared from her readied arm like a spiraling blue firestorm. A glance at Shio's face showed nothing but the raging lethal intent she had pent-up, whilst she howled a deafening and ferocious cry from the top of her lungs. As she did, her punch would connect against the pit of Heidi's stomach, releasing a cataclysmic shockwave that paled in contrast to the first.

Von Bern sneered minutely as Heidi Clovis, doubtlessly one of his most challenging 'students', mounted the steps towards Shio Kyrou, a challenge in her own right where the experienced professor was concerned. This whole exercise was meant to teach some humility, as well as impart even the smallest amount of perspective into its participants. Perspective that either one would find vital in a real fight, where the violence didn't end just because one participant got tired or hurt. Heidi's rather unique capabilities had given her some strange notions about the world around her, and nothing short of actively beating those ideas out of her seemed to work, and given just how tough she was, that was a losing proposition. He'd long ago determined that it was far easier to injure the Clovis girl's ego than her physical body, and he was hopeful that her cavalier arrogance would clash with Shio's own. Both girls had likely grown up assuming no one could be stronger than they were, though they chose to show it in much different ways. In Heidi, her presumptions manifested as the fallacious assumption that she could not fail at any task, even if it directly challenged points where she was weakest. Last year's exercises had been proof enough of that. Had Heidi kept her temper in check, it was unlikely that Iris could never have forced her to give up the high ground, but her pride had been wounded and her temper had cracked, and what should have been an effortless victory had become a humiliating defeat. Shio was different in that her own pride didn't presume victory so much as it necessitated it. The faunus girl, for as strong and determined as she was, could simply not allow herself to fail. She would fight on well past the point of good sense and discretion, doing more harm than good to all parties involved, herself very much included. Her stunt with the Vitus girl had proven that. Von Bern had little doubt that Aegle's own bizarre temperament had contributed to her visit to the infirmary, but it was not her foe's inability to admit defeat that had landed her in Von Bern's classroom, but Shio's willingness to attack another student. Willingness that would hopefully be tempered by facing an opponent truly stronger and tougher than she was, in circumstances where her defeat was all but guaranteed. There doubtelessly were better ways of going about it, he'd have quickly admitted, but you work with the tools at your disposal, even if the only tool to hand is a sociopathic sledgehammer with disproportionate delusions of grandeur. His sneer became an outright grimace as Heidi, as easily as if it were made from cardboard, drove her sword into the topmost step of the platform and transformed it into its true shape. It was a ludicrous weapon, Orthus. Nearly two meters long and as wide across as most men, it should have given Heidi the upper hand at capturing the high ground for herself, especially considering that her opponent used no weapon at all. Von Bern had trained too many brawler's to doubt their effectiveness, and Shio was an especially competent brawler at that, but her lack of reach put her at a considerable disadvantage. Any equally competent fighter in Heidi's position should have been able to ensure that Shio never so much as got in punching distance. Which was why it really shouldn't have come as any surprise to Von Bern when Heidi squandered her most singular advantage in order to stroke her own voluminous ego. It was also a classic case of Heidi being unable to see past the tip of her arrogant nose. While Von Bern entertained no illusions about whether Heidi could take a punch, even one unguarded and with Shio's titanic strength behind it, it was not simply a question of coming away unhurt. Heidi, so consumed by her own high opinion of herself, had failed to recognize just how precarious her position was, and it shocked no one, least of all Von Bern, when Shio fed her a fistful of humble pie.
Heidi sneered openly at the small faunus, as self assured as if she were standing against a child who had never so much as seen a fight. In a way, that was precisely how she viewed this wild, unthreatening waif of a girl, as just another fragile weakling in a world practically full of them. She was cool and relaxed, even as her small foe bristled with every indication of the violence that was soon to follow, and didn't even flinch when the flames first erupted around her. Without knowing exactly what the runt's capabilities were, Heidi had still half expected something to do with aura or semblance would follow her gracious offer for one free hit. It was a prospect that Heidi even welcomed, if only because it would demonstrate just how far below her Shio was. In fact, Heidi only sneered all the wider as the heat buffeted across her, hot enough that it immolated the occasional desultory thread, yet not hot enough to even make her sweat. As far as semblances went, this one was particular pathetic, and could have been outdone by a handful of red dust and half the energy she was pumping into the air around her. Heidi could have done more to burn someone by rubbing her hands together really fast and then slapping them in the face. Just what was Von Bern playing at, making such a weakling her first opponent? The sneer stopped growing as the faunus girl began walking towards her, however, and the slightest kernel of reticence insinuated itself into Heidi's steadfast heart. There was some impact to those steps which she did not fail to notice, suggesting to her that there was more to the faunus girl's flaming aura than it appeared. Before she could puzzle out precisely what, however, Shio was lunging towards her. For those watching, it would have like the faunus girl had closed the final meter without actually bothering to move through it, simply appearing in front of Heidi. Heidi was probably the only person in the whole room who had actually been able to follow the movement, and thus the only student present whose expression did not subsequently light up with surprise. Instead, Heidi's expression managed to harden into one of considerable irritation. Her heightened senses and reaction speed did not let her parse out all the necessary details in the fractions of a second that made up Shio's attack, but they told her enough. Had it all been a ploy, right then would have been the time for Heidi to act. Had she sidestepped the incoming punch, she could have slapped the over extended faunus in the back of the head and right out of the arena. She almost did it too, stopped only the surprising speed of Shio's attack and her own indecision and unwillingness to compromise her efforts to humiliate her smaller opponent. Before she had quite decided if it was worth abandoning her original plan for an easy victory, Shio's fist had already made its unobstructed connection with Heidi's stomach, and it was all a matter of physics after that... Like a sack of concrete shot out of a cannon, Heidi was lifted from her feet and propelled back, flying almost parallel with the ground, and into the decorative wooden railing that separated the first level of gallery seating from the central pit where the platform stood. It wasn't a considerable distance, only a matter of a couple of meters, but Heidi's impact still buckled the banister as if it had been struck by an axe. A united gasp rose up among the audience, punctuated by a giddy 'Woo!' from the back row, as Heidi's atlesian frame slipped towards the floor. Even the least attentive and sensitive among them could tell that Heidi, uncharacteristically true to her word, had done nothing to block Shio's punch, not even with her aura. Yet Heidi didn't fall to the ground in a heap, as the majority half expected her to. Rather, she stumbled free of the wall with a look of mild disbelief on her face, rather than any overt expression of pain. Her free hand coursed across her stomach and felt the scorch marks, left by Shio's fist in the form fitting synthetic fabric. Then, pulling a fist and straightening back to her full height with only the slightest suggestion of stiffness, Heidi's golden eyes found the flaming faunus, all hints of amusement extinguished from her tanned countenance. Wordlessly, she mounted the steps towards Shio for the second time that morning, dragging her sword across the ground with her. There remained no trace of the swagger and confidence that was present during her first ascent, and even her scowl had vanished, supplanted by a look of wide eyed rage. Before she'd even made it to the top step, Heidi lashed out with her sword, taking a swing right at Shio's head. It was a dumb and brutal sort of swing, the sort that required absolutely no technique and telegraphed itself as much as a week in advance, the sort that even a novice could duck beneath with little regard. What made it threatening, however, was the complete lack of effort it seemed to require. It was one thing to carry a man sized piece of steel like it weighed less than nothing, but swinging it just as indifferently, let alone one-handed, was something else altogether. " Little runt!" Heidi hissed between her gritted teeth, her golden eyes wild with fury, as she brought Orthus around to slash back the way she'd just swung. A dull ache throbbed where she'd been struck, protesting each swing, but it only made Heidi swing that much harder. Her temper was a flimsy thing, and the shock of being thrown across the room, accompanied by her disbelief that it had actually hurt, had shattered it like cheap glass. Shio Kyrou

Fierce and enraged, Shio had powered her tightly clenched fist into the gut of her opponent without any remorse. Every flaking cinder of the aura shrouding her arm glowed with thrashing radiance, in a wild yet mesmerizing display of the energy her semblance possessed. After impact, having put all of her strength and ramming speed behind the potent strike, it was no surprise to the faunus that her opponent soared far and fast away from herself - as far away as it would take her, before crashing into and shattering the finely furnished oak barrier. Shio slammed her right foot down immediately after, sending yet another gust explosion in every direction only to smash the feeble wooden plank beneath her feet, and bring herself to a complete stop before she heaved off the platform. All the muscles in her body wanted to move forward and pursue Heidi, this much was easily exposed by the barbaric and wide look of her eyes, and the way she grit her teeth together so furiously. However, the conscious in her mind shackled her to stop, with knowledge of the true extent of her own capabilities in mind. There was no need, that punch alone could have very easily been enough to end the fight. Yet before Heidi even stumbled back upright, Shio already felt an overpowering sense of danger still emitting from her, neither was she willing to take a gamble that her instincts were wrong - as they rarely ever had been. The faunus watched, as her eyes narrowed and expression shrunk until it was nearly placid, almost bordering on curiosity with mild hints of disgust. To even look at Heidi made her feel incredibly sour, knowing that she did not even attempt to evade her punch just then. In that moment Shio had never felt so underestimated, so pitied, in her entire life. The thought of 'serves you right' did not even occur to her, as fury loomed about her presence like a residual stormcloud, neither did she feel the slightest bit of satisfaction from the aura-fueled punch she had inflicted. There was no happiness from the humiliation that she imposed on Heidi, or the praise awarded from the flock of her classmates, only bitterness. Without words she looked upon her enemy, hardly retaining the capacity to appear shocked as Heidi remained standing on her feet with no apparent difficulty. Naturally it could not have been that easy, as she sullenly mulled over the possibilities, Von Bern knew about her semblance and had planned this fight accordingly. If she had been so confident to take a free hit to begin with, without making an effort to dodge, there had to have been something protecting her - as Shio perceived to see her full-scale attack do so little damage - that much had been obvious from the start. There had been no resistance from aura either, which dawned upon the faunus as Heidi approached, this meant that her body was straightforwardly hardy enough to resist the damage. Which also meant that the eerie yet brief feeling that she had touched upon just now, in the moment she hit her enemy, was not entirely inaccurate. To her, a person who had experienced this feeling enough to remember vividly, it had felt more like she had struck a grimm, instead of a person. Shio refused to believe that a person could be this tough without the enhancement of aura, which left her with only one sensible conclusion - a semblance. One that not only bolstered physical resilience, but possibly strength as well. The lupine faunus came to understand all of this in just moments before the gargantuan sword Heidi wielded was swung at her, first approaching on Shio's left in a curving horizontal arc. It tore through the air as if it were a liquid substance, creating a bellow of wind in its wake. The faunus allowed her obeservant amber eyes to open wider, in the split second before, and looked for an opportunity. Though she would find none, given the reach that the blade granted, she was nowhere near close enough to counter and did not have the means to parry. Then there was also something else that she noticed, and her amber gleam abruptly flashed to panic when she realized it. Flustered, all of the remaining aura coating Shio flared with strained potency, and she swiftly pressed upon both heels of her feet. A mighty shockwave exploded from the ground beneath her boots and sent splinters of wood in all directions as the faunus flung herself backwards - airborne by less than an inch - to the center of the arena, barely escaping the length of Orthus by enough to feel the weapon breeze past her raven colored hair. Shio then forced herself back onto solid footing, pressuring her steel boots to grind and tear across the wooden surface, she slid to a total halt a few further meters away to leave two fissures in aftermath. All in less than a second, when Shio had stopped and the wooden fragments settled, she appeared to be wholly poised and unmoving - whilst the aura from earlier seemed to burn away on her and fade to nothing. The alarm on her features had only existed for that fraction of time, and for a reason she almost felt herself grimace at. That reason, of course being, the restrictions that were placed on her. Shio was not happy playing by Von Berns rules, and on that thought she shot a quick glare at the old man almost like a non-verbal complaint, then tracked her eyes back onto Heidi. As much as she wanted to complain about this exercise and insult his ridiculous moustache, she equally doubted that her opponent would not take advantage of such an opening.

Spit misted through Heidi's gritted teeth as she effortlessly arrested Orthus' second swing before sweeping it back for a third, like a child slashing at leaves with a bare branch. It took nothing for her to reverse the colossal sword's momentum, just as it took nothing for her to wade forward while doing it, ever advancing on the smaller faunus with murderous intent in her wide golden eyes. This little wretch had punched her, and done so hard enough to embarrass her in a whole room full of weaklings, and for that she would pay. Pay and pay dearly. Nevermind that it was Heidi herself who'd let the faunus punch her, nevermind that the faunus had turned out to be strong enough to actually make it hurt. In Heidi's mind, all the blame and all the reckoning should and would fall squarely on Shio's shoulders. Nobody was laughing now, though; The whole auditorium had grown silent as the two squared off. Some students were doubtlessly stunned by the incredible strength on display in the brutally heedless swipes of Heidi's swords, while others were still recovering from the blow that Heidi had simply shrugged off. A couple might even have been thinking about their own turn with the tall Legionite, and how they would fair in the ring against her. Heidi didn't notice and didn't much care; All her focus was on Shio. She'd seen that look of shock on her opponent's face, that expression that had doubtlessly been accompanied by the realization of how out matched she was, and it was as good as blood in the water to a hungry leviathan. Halting her sword a fourth time, Heidi suddenly reversed her grip on her blade and dropped its shovel-wide tip into the abused boards at her feet. Rather than sweep her sword around again, she instead dug up the wooden floor and heaved a sizable chunk of it in Shio's direction. The floor burst finely apart in a shower of splinters and tortured wood, none heavy enough to do much damage on their own, that turned the air in front of Heidi into a rain of shrapnel as thick as mist. Every motion was as incidental and contemptuous as the last, like a child kicking down a castle made of sand. It took no effort for her to reduce the very floor on which they stood to kindling, the same way that Shio had with her explosive footfalls. The only difference was that Shio's efforts had looked just as powerful as they were, where as Heidi simply made the world around her look brittle and fragile. Just as it took nothing for her to swing her ludicrously long sword, it took nothing for her to reduce everything in reach to rubble at a touch. With the floor bursting into particulate before her, Heidi reversed her grip again and took Orthus in both hands. There was nothing incidental about the swing that followed, which was less like a child slashing leaves than a workman swinging a sledgehammer; Heidi planted her feet before putting every ounce her strength, a quite considerable amount, into it. Furthermore, just as it was the first earnest swing she'd taken, so too was it the most unorthodox. Where as she had made an effort to swing with the edge of her sword before, this time she twisted the blade so that, rather than flying on its edge, it swept through the air like a great steel paddle, to strike with the flat of the blade. The effect this had was two fold; Not only did it greatly increase the width of Heidi's sword, such that ducking under or jumping over the blade was nearly impossible, it buffeted the particulate from her previous swing like the beat of a nevermore's wing, turning all those airborne splinters and wood-chunks into lethal shrapnel, like the blast of an oversized blunderbus, loaded with particularly flimsy ammunition.
