PLAYED BY Gresian Thirty Six (36) December (12) | Male Hunter Human | |
Mordant, Rubine |
★ APPEARANCE
By far, the most striking thing about Rubine's appearance is his bright red hair which he wears in a ruffled mess. Despite his best efforts to keep it tidy, it only takes a few minutes for it to default back to the unruly style. Contrasting the firey colour of his hair is the light blue of his eyes, the shade being similar to clean water in a shallow pond. These two features are bold against his paler skin, the only other notable feature of his face being the X-shaped scar that crosses on the bridge of his nose and spans above and below his eyes.
His figure isn't much to write home about, he isn't heavily muscled but what thickness there is to him is all muscles, so while not as powerful as some he can certainly pack a punch. He stands at 6'4", weighing about 170lb. Across his body, there is a large number of small faded scars, as well as a larger, much more visible one stretching along his left side. While the many smaller ones were just little nicks from sparring or particularly difficult Grimm, the larger one was from an encounter he had a few years back with some bandits.
As for clothes, he typically wears an army green long-sleeve jacket with a high collar that has a gold-coloured trim and two pockets at the front. The inner lining of the jacket is black, two inner pockets situated over the chest area. On the jacket's black cuffs is a gold-coloured insignia, two small flames that stretch at the top to combine and create a larger blaze. Typically, he wears the jacket open leaving his chest and abs exposed, but in colder climates, he simply zips it up. He also wears black combat pants that have silver chains stitched to the fabric to keep them from catching on things or dangling. The chains come out from the front pockets of the pants, crossing in front to finish in the opposite front pocket. He also wears thick black leather combat boots and matching gloves that have small aluminum plates over the knuckles.
★ PERSONALITY
★ HISTORY
Many years ago, a young huntress and a fresh-faced hunter who had just graduated from the academy decided to celebrate their graduation by heading out to a bar in their hometown in Setek. Their names were Scarlet and Nava, the two being childhood friends. During their time at Vytal, they had spent most of their days hanging out with each other, and over that time they had grown fonder of each other. During their trip to the bar, both of them got rather tipsy. Nava asked Scarlet to come over to his place for the night, Scarlet accepting the invitation. Both in a drunken stupor, they decided to have a little fun with each other. One thing led to another, and a few weeks later Scarlet discovered she was pregnant. Shocked by the turn of events and furious with both herself and Nava for getting her into this situation, she disappeared without telling anyone where she was going, or why she was going. Wanting to make sure she wouldn't be found, she moved out to a remote village in the kingdom of Pinnacle that was deep into the mountains. Months past, and in the snowy month of December, she gave birth to her child, a firey-haired boy she named Rubine.
The joy of bearing a child was cut short for Scarlet, as she had little money and couldn't afford much. Since being a huntress was a job that was hard on the body, she had to take a break while she was pregnant. The money she earned from the few jobs before was nearly gone, so she had to find somewhere for Rubine to stay until she had enough money to provide for them both. So, much to her dismay, she tried to make contact with Nava, and upon reaching him she told him all about what happened the past few months. It was a surprise to Nava, and while he was a bit hurt that Scarlet waited until then to tell him, he agreed to look after Rubine, on the condition that he would be able to spend time with him even after Scarlet had gotten enough money to be able to settle properly.
The first few years of Rubine's life were spent at his dad's house. Nava had moved to Rift, Stalwart to be exact. Being a hunter, Nava was rarely around to care for Rubine, so despite living at his dad's place he was much more acquainted with the caretaker Nava had hired to babysit Rubine in his absence. When his dad was home, the two would spend as much time as they could together, going to fairs and playing in the living room. Rubine was still pretty young, so he never really knew why his father wasn't really around a lot, all he knew was that the caretaker told him it was for a very good reason.
When Rubine woke up on his sixth birthday, his father was waiting for him in his room. His father told him that he would be getting a special surprise, and when he brought Rubine down to the living room, he was met by a woman he didn't recognize. Upon seeing him, the woman rushed over to him with tears of joy in her eyes, leaving Rubine extremely confused. Nava explained that the woman was her mother, Scarlet, and that he was going to be living with her now. He assured him that they would still see each other now and then and that it would be better than staying with him, but it was all too confusing for young Rubine to really understand what his dad was saying.
Over the next three years, Rubine grew closer to his mother. At the younger age, he was too naive to fully grasp everything, so there weren't any mental boundaries blocking his view of his mom. In his mind, he had just never met her until then and that was that, nothing special. Of course, he still saw his dad on occasion, usually on holidays and his birthdays, but also sometimes on weekends depending if his dad was available. To him, that way of life was normal, he never thought twice about any of it. His parents also put on smiling faces when around him, but there was still some tension between the two surrounding the whole ordeal.
When he was ten, he began to realize that his family was a bit odd. He had made a few friends in the village he lived in, the same one that his mother first moved to when she found out she was pregnant, and whenever he went over to their houses he noticed that both their parents were always around. He asked them if their dads just visited their house often, but to his confusion, his friends all just told him that their dad was always there. So, one day, he asked his mother why his dad wasn't around all the time. At first, Scarlet wasn't sure what to say to him and just dismissed the question saying she would answer it some other time, but as Rubine continued to ask again and again she finally gave in. She told him that she and Nava had never gotten married and that things were complicated because of it. She did her best to be gentle about it, but ultimately she had to tell him that they hadn't planned on having Rubine at all. She assured him that they still both loved him very much and that he shouldn't think of himself as being any less of a person because of it, but the shock was still enough to jar him for a while.
From then on, Rubine was a bit more aware of everything going on around him, in a way he could see that his parents just put on happy faces in front of him when his dad came to visit. He kept quiet about it, though, he didn't want to bother them. When he was eleven, one of the older kids in the village talked him into trying cigarettes, and after a while, he began to go out to smoke with them every Saturday. He only ever had one each time, and he always did it with the same kid, but after a few months, he got hooked. It wasn't a serious problem, but at his age, it certainly wasn't good for him. On weekends where he went out of town with his mom, he found himself to be shaky, and would often try to meet with the older kid as soon as he got back.
In the week leading up to his twelfth birthday, his dad had come over to visit. It had been a surprise to him that his dad had come so soon, he usually just showed up the day before and would stay a little while after. Apparently, he was going to be heading out for a mission the day after Rubine's birthday, so he shifted his visit to before. With him there, it meant that Rubine couldn't go out to meet his friend on Saturday for the weekly smoke. However, Rubine had a small box of cigarettes hidden in his room, the box being an early birthday gift from the friend. When everyone was asleep he grabbed a cigarette from the pack, opened his window, and lit it. When he was done, he dropped the cigarette to the floor out of habit, which caused the rug over his floor to catch fire. Frantically, he tried to put out the rapidly growing flame, but to his dismay, it just wasn't dying out. It wasn't long before the wooden floor caught fire and soon began to spread. Scared, he ran out of his room, past his mother's room, past the living room where his dad was sleeping on the couch, and out the front door. When he caught his breath, he turned around to see smoke pouring out his window, a burning glow emitting from it. Too scared to go back in, he began screaming for help, calling out to whoever could hear him. By the time someone had come out of their house to see what the commotion was about, Rubine's entire house was a huge blaze as the burning structure collapsed on itself. His parents died in that house fire.
Rubine blamed himself entirely for what happened that day, and while many of the people in the village told him it wasn't his fault, he knew better. They didn't know that his smoking caused it, or that he had even smoked at all, so they all assumed it was just some freak accident. However, it wasn't the cause of the fire that he blamed himself most about, it was the fact that he was too scared to go back and get his parents out before it was too late. He swore to himself and to his now deceased parents that he would get stronger, that he would do whatever he could to atone for what he did. From then on, a flame was ignited in him, a burning desire to make up for what he had done.
For that reason, he made his way into Vytal. It was the only way he could think of to get stronger, so armed with merely a pair of arm bracers he managed to get his hands on, he entered the four years of basic training that happened before the official hunter classes. There, he obtained the first version of his current weapon, a standard pair of Cestus with curved blades on the backside, nothing special. When the four years were up, he was prepared to enter into his freshman year as a hunter in training. During the four years of hunter training, he modified his weapon to what it is now, making the final adjustments in his sophomore year. He didn't really have many friends at the academy, both because he was a bit shy, but also because he felt he didn't really deserve companionship. Despite his promise to get stronger, he still couldn't get over what had happened, he couldn't help but feel like he was just some lesser person for what he did.
Upon graduating from the academy, he began his life as a hunter, taking up residence in Legion. He didn't want to live anywhere his parents had, he felt like it would be too much for him to handle at the time. As well, despite his best efforts to quit, he still smoked and in fact had begun to smoke once a day instead of once a week. He hated himself for not being able to kick the habit, but he just couldn't stop. Life as a hunter wasn't grand, but he enjoyed every moment of it to the fullest. Seeing the hope he gave to people, seeing the good he was able to do, it gave him hope that the future may not be so bad.
At the age of thirty-two, he decided to travel back to the remote village in Pinnacle that he grew up in. He wasn't planning on staying, just visiting his parent's graves. It was the first time was going back, and the first time he felt prepared to look at that past again. As he drew near the village, he saw smoke rising up from where it was, causing him to freeze up a bit. This time, however, he got himself to move forward, to go up and confront whatever was going on in the village. Upon reaching it, he was shocked to see bodies laying across the ground, a group of men wearing masks scattered about the main street, setting fire to the building. In a surge of anger and a deeply rooted will to atone, he activated his semblance for the first time. During his years at the academy he had never known what it was, but at this moment it finally revealed itself. It didn't surprise him, however, it felt natural. He rushed in, his body blazing as he attacked the bandits who were destroying the village. When he got to the last one, the two clashed for a while, but Rubine was running out of steam. He wasn't used to the aura drain the semblance put on him, so when he depended on his aura to block an incoming attack at his side, he was surprised to feel the strike connect and sink in slightly. The shock of that left him open to a cross slash from his opponent, striking his face across the bridge of his nose. It was painful, agonizingly so, but Rubine pushed on for one final strike to get rid of his opponent, himself collapsing soon after.
When he awoke, he found himself inside a house that looked much like the one from his childhood. After a few minutes of not knowing what was happening, he saw one of the people who lived in his village walk into the room with a light meal for him in case he had woken. Apparently, not all the houses had been destroyed, though the majority of them and the majority of the people were no more. Once he was okay enough to get up on his own, he made his way through the ruined village to the graveyard where two empty graves sat side-by-side, the graves of his parents. After a short visit, he returned back to the person who had nursed him back to health and offered to take her and anyone else in the village somewhere safe, but she insisted on staying and letting the village name live on.
And so, Rubine left the village alone, going back into the world to protect it the only way he could. He would often return back to the village to see how it was doing and to visit the graves of his parents, but he still didn't plan on moving there for a long time. He did, however, move to Stalwart. While he didn't live in the same area as where he grew up, he would make a point of going by his old childhood house every now and then to see how it was holding up.
★ PERSONALITY
POSITIVE - Optimistic Despite his past having its fair share of rough patches, Rubine is a rather optimistic person when it comes to how he sees the world. While he struggles to share that same image with himself, he sees a potential for a happy world free of troubles and worry, something he truly believes will become reality one day. - Perseverant If not anything else, Rubine is perseverant. Despite all the negativity he has endured and despite the constant self-blaming, he is determined to push forward towards a better day. He feels that one should never forget the past, but at the same time shouldn't let it stop them from doing what they want to do. Instead, it should motivate them to do the right thing and push them to accomplish their dreams. - Compassionate Rubine has a big heart and is very in touch with the feelings of others. He doesn't want people to have to endure the kinds of hardships he did, and he often pours his heart out to those who have had bad experiences. If someone is dealing with a problem in their current life, Rubine would probably be one of the first people they would turn to as he loves to help people through such things. - Intelligent Due to the feeling of guilt about what happened to his parents, Rubine made sure to dedicate himself to his studies during his time at the academy. He wanted to make them proud, as well as redeem himself in a way for everything. This disciplined work habit caused him to gain a lot of information at the academy and even stretched beyond slightly as he would do some independent research from time to time. - Charitable Rubine is a very giving person, whether it be donating money to charities or giving up some of his time to help somebody work out a problem, he often performs acts of good will at no charge at all. The only reason he even accepts money on missions he takes up is because he needs money to live and maintain his weaponry, but other than those funds all of his earnings make their way into the hands of others one way or another. | NEGATIVE - Shy Even though he enjoys helping others and providing support for them, Rubine can often be very shy when talking about himself or when in a casual interaction. He gets flustered rather easily and often takes a while to ease into a conversation before he finally lets his personality shine. This is especially bad with girls as he has met a few more... daring ones during his career as a hunter. - Self-conscious Rubine has a rather negative view of himself despite his optimism towards the world and his generally good-spirited lifestyle. Stemming from the incident where he lost his parents, this sort of negative self-thought and pessimistic attitude about him as a person often cloud his thoughts, leading to him being rather insecure around others. - Addict It is no secret to those who know him that Rubine was a bit of a problem with addiction. While smoking is certainly a very prominent one, it is also noteworthy that he abstains from drinking any alcohol or going to any casinos as he feels that indulging himself even once in such activities would lead him to a similar state to his smoking. While his smoking problem itself isn't extremely out of hand, he usually lights up about two or three times a day. - Self-blaming Something anyone close enough to know about his past would know, Rubine is extremely guilt ridden about the death of his parents. While he continues to push forward despite the burden, it is certainly a heavy burden that he carries. Even still, he hasn't gotten over it which causes him to believe he is a lot worse of a person than he really is. - Soft While he is very empathetic and loves to comfort people, Rubine can also be a bit too soft. It isn't very difficult to abuse his will to help others, and he can be rather oblivious to the manipulation as his mind focuses on the fact that what he's doing is supposedly helping somebody else in some way. |

★ COMBAT NOTES
WEAPONS
Rubine wields a pair of metal Cestuses, the two gloves having a row of three small curved blades each that ran along the backside. The blades are double edged, allowing for a dangerous backhand if one isn't careful. Along the inner side of each Cestus is a small tube that is fed by a thin, flexible pack that is sewn into the back of his jacket. The pouch is filled with fire dust, effectively making the small tube a close-range flamethrower. On top of this all, there are two additional tubes on either side of the flamethrower tube on each Cestus, the two tubes being the barrels of rapid-fire guns. The barrels are fed by a flexible track that spirals through the arm of his jacket, the feeding point being just where the sleeve meets the body. The feeding point has a cap that can be screwed shut to make sure the bullets don't fall out in the middle of combat. The bullets themselves are spherical in shape, measuring four millimeters in diameter. The track can hold six hundred and fifty bullets, the barrel launching them about one hundred meters at a rate of five per second.
The Cestuses can alter, expanding outwards to turn into twin Patas. The blade of each Pata is connected to the hilt by a razor sharp wire, and when a trigger on the handle is pulled it launches the blade out. The wire is two feet long, and due to its sharpness, it can be used as an effective weapon alongside the blades it would sling around. The tricks don't end there, however, as the flamethrowers and guns that are part of the Cestus mode are still functional.
MISC.
Rubine carries with him a rather extensive list of items, a fair chunk of it being maintenance. On the inside of his jacket, he has two pouches, each carrying a spare blade and wire for his Patas. He also keeps additional blades for his Cestuses in these pouches, enough to replace each blade twice. On his belt, he carries a few small pouches of dust crystals, each pouch labeled with a symbol corresponding to a dust type. The types carried are earth, water, energy, steam, ice, kinetic, and divine. Each pouch contains six crystals, them being used along with his semblance. His clothes are also modified using earth dust threads to help with defense, allowing him to harden the fabric to block weapons and the sort. These threads are also paired with gravity dust ones to keep the clothes lightweight even when the earth threads are activated, all of these threads having ten charges.
Perserverance, the power to move forward regardless of the adversity and obstacles in your path, the power to hold on to what you believe without fault and to keep true to your convictions even in the worst of times. This strength to look forward and not let the past consume you, this drive to take one more step forward with your chin held high even after you're bruised and broken, this is what is emanated by Rubine's aura. A strong feeling that says things will get better, a surge of strength to keep you in the game, even if it doesn't actually give you the physical strength to do it all, it will certainly give you the mental strength to. This feeling is accompanied by the scent of wood smoke and the taste of iron. His aura appears red and creates a slight haze around him similar to the haze that surrounds a smoldering hot object.

BURNING CONVICTION
Awoken when bandits attacked one of his homes, this fiery semblance shows his burning will to move forward. The semblance causes flames to spur up all over Rubine's body. Blue flames streak out from his eyes, and orange ones burst forth from his arms, legs, and torso. They burn without smoke or scent, but they all glow brightly and crackle like flames eating up logs. The flames do not burn Rubine, however, that doesn't hold true for those he clashes with. When it's activated, the feeling of perseverance that accompanies his aura is blasted forth, becoming an overwhelming presence. The main attracting of his semblance, however, is its ability to be affected by dust to give the flames unique properties.
When combined with earth dust, the orange flames on his body turn green and gain the ability to "harden". This means that the flames seemingly turn solid, allowing for a strong offense, and a powerful defense.
When combined with water dust, the orange flames turn a deep blue and gain the ability to be absorbed. This means that the flames can soak into fabrics and the sort like water would, making them difficult to get rid of. As well, it allows him to "splash" his flames at people as if he were shaking water off of him.
When combined with energy dust, the orange flames turn yellow and become conductible. This means that the flames are able to travel like electricity through metal or other substances that electricity would be able to flow through. They travel as efficiently as the electricity would, and along with their burn would provide a slight shock.
When combined with steam dust, the orange flames turn gray and begin to produce a lot of smoke. The smoke is the same as any smoke that is produced by a fire so one has to be careful about inhaling it. It also provides a bit of masking for Rubine because it obscures any clear look at his body when he's standing still.
When combined with ice dust the orange flames turn light blue. The flames become cold instead of warm, and they stop giving off light. The coldness of the flames is inversely equal to the original heat of the flames.
When combined with kinetic dust, the orange flames turn purple and become launchable. This works similarly to how he can splash water flames, except they can launch further with less effort. Unlike the water flames, they don't soak.
When combined with divine dust, the orange flames turn bright white and they burn brighter and have a slight healing effect as well as a calming effect. The healing and calming don't affect Rubine in a similar way to how none of the other flames cause him to burn, so he only uses divine dust when he is out of combat. The flames also loose any significant heat, making them just body temperature.
Despite the versatility of the flames, there are still some restrictions as to how he can activate each variant. Firstly, the flames can only have one attribute at a time, so he can't have two dust types active at the same time. Secondly, he needs a dust crystal to cause it to shift and each shift requires the use of aura. Thirdly, if he deactivates his semblance, the flames automatically revert back to their standard form. Finally, if he wishes to revert back to standard flames after activating a dust variant, his only option is to deactivate his semblance then reactivate it. Deactivation will happen automatically if he runs out of aura.
