Hey, guys!
So starting yesterday, I started hyping up - and in turn hyping up some other people - about some…IDEAS…I’ve been having.
Before we get to the point, here’s a little background on REMNANTS/TWBTD.
This site is my brainchild, of sorts. Many of you that have known me for a while - particularly Getter - know that this role play was created, at first, to operate as a “sister site” to another forum that went by the name Red Like Roses (RLR). Ever since I was introduced to the RWBYverse, I’ve always known it was going to go down the path we started seeing in Volume 3. It’s a dark, gritty world that’s sure to be full of violence. The main enemies in the series are creatures of Grimm - monsters with seemingly no other objective than to wipe out mankind.
So This Will Be The Day (TWBTD) was started to embrace that darkness. As the site grew, we changed the name to REMNANTS. This was done to make the site name easier to remember (believe me, people have gotten the name wrong before the change) and also stand by that original intent of the site. Here we are remnants of an old world, creating something new and exciting for role players of all experience levels (that said, it’s easy to see where there may be a slight bias towards more experienced role players, but don’t be dissuaded).
I once compared the site - in its original intent - as “The RWBYverse if written by George RR Martin”. Not that I write that good lol.
So what’s the hype?
Well, it’s no secret that by using a free platform, there are certain restrictions we must adhere to - such as what kind of content is and is not allowed on the site. Now, sure, it’s a system that’s very hard to police. Proboards has - probably - millions of forums, and keeping them all in line is remarkably difficult even for a large team. Some sites get away with a lot, but others not so much. Since getting involved in RWBY, I’ve come to learn that there are a lot of trolls that target the fandom - which is true of any group, but still.
What my primary concern has been is the site being flagged, unbeknownst to us, and not having a chance to respond. Any person could report Remnants for any reason, and the chances of it getting a site shut down are - surprisingly - high. I’d hate for us to all go to bed one night, then go to log on for some of those sweet, succulent posts only to have the site shut down because of some vague ToS violation.
So the idea is to migrate the site prior to the beginning of Arc 2 (Arc 1, which we’re playing, has been termed the “Prologue” arc) to a paid post. What is that host, you ask? MyBB. For those of you that linger around the interwebs, a lot of pretty large sites use MyBB because it’s free and easy to use. Not only that, but in doing some research I’ve found that there are a LOT of plugins that we can utilize to give a balanced mix of Proboards’s system and JCink’s - such as the SUBACCOUNTS feature so many people love! c:
By hosting through a paid service we can eliminate ads (or target them to be more relevant and engaging, depending on popular opinion) and allow whatever content we want. This means Remnants can be the site it was always meant to be, opening the door to all kinds of creative works that just can’t be featured through the site as it currently sits.
Here’s a breakdown of the costs, and where I’m at as far as saving (don’t worry, I’m not going to ask you for money):
MyBB Software: FREE! $0/$0
MyBB Themes: ALSO FREE! $0/$0
Domain Name: Already own one, we don’t need it! $15/$15
Hosting: $5/month for the basic package I’m looking at, which will give a 10% discount for a full year prepaid. This makes the total price of getting the hosting comparable - if not cheaper - than buying a year of PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold. $54/$54
Advertising: Mostly free, but putting $10 or $20 into advertising the site can get us a long way! $20/$20
Total Costs: $90-$100 per year
Overall, it’s going to cost LESS THAN $100 A YEAR for me to set up Remnants on a premium hosting service, running premium (and free at that) forum software with the best of both worlds, that will allow us to make the site everything it was meant to - and can - be.
Of course, this is an ongoing thought process. I’ll be bouncing around on details regarding this frequently, updating this thread every time it’s needed.
I’m curious, however, on what your thoughts are. Feel free to post here and join the discussion! It’s boring to do it by yourself! >:D
