The mood of the princess was infectious. Lily couldn't help but to feel positively elated when she began rambling off the various things she'd like to try with Lily at the mall. She felt in that moment very much like a toy doll that the princess intended to dress up. Somehow, the thought did not offend her as much as it normally would have. In all honesty, she was overjoyed. She had never gotten to try on fancy clothes before. She'd never owned a pair of shoes. She had never once taken a moment to explore her femininity, nor had she even really understood that there was something to explore until the fluttering sensation in her chest, and the pink flush that rose to her cheeks told her otherwise.
She had never truly gotten a chance to explore that side of herself. She was new to society, and new to the idea of traditional femininity. However, in that moment, faced with the option to go dress up in pretty clothing, being able to spend some time with Amber and learn more about the Princess, she found herself strangely both excited and fearful. She didn't know how to act, and felt a little weird letting the princess pay for her, and yet at the same time she was tempted to grab the princess' hand tight and dash to the nearest clothing outlet.
However, those feelings of joy and furtive exploration of her inner self died the moment Amber asked her about where she was from. She froze in her tracks, a cold chill running down her spine. She wasn't sure what to say. What would someone so high born as the princess think when she found out that Lily was as literally as low class as it was possible to be. She fidgeted in place, her hand gripping Ambers like a vice. She swallowed her fear down, and quietly said. "I'm not from anywhere... The day I first met you, when I came to help you in Setek. That was the first day I'd ever stepped foot in a kingdom. Before that, before Vytal.. well, I was alone out there with the Grimm. I actually only arrived at Vytal about four days prior to coming to Setek too... You may have noticed how new I am to a bunch of seemingly basic stuff. I can't tell you how many times I've drawn someone's attention for doing something I would never consider bad. I don't exactly blend in yet." She said finally letting go of the princess' hand. She turned away from her, hugging her chest and closing her eyes. She was certain that rejection was about to come, waiting for it with bated breath.

"I'm not from anywhere…”The first four words Lily murmured in response to Amber’s inquiry snapped the Princess back to reality, her whimsical daydream about the Festival withering away as she immediately tuned in to everything the girl had to say. "The day I first met you, when I came to help you in Setek. That was the first day I'd ever stepped foot in a kingdom. Before that, before Vytal.. well, I was alone out there with the Grimm. I actually only arrived at Vytal about four days prior to coming to Setek too... You may have noticed how new I am to a bunch of seemingly basic stuff.”Amber couldn’t begin to imagine life outside the Kingdoms. She rarely ever left Rift growing up, and as she got older, responsibilities kept her - in some ways - locked away in the glorious white halls of Rift’s palace. Her and Lily were similar in that respect - first stepping foot in the Kingdoms. The only difference, really, was their background. It was interesting to find someone that shared that peculiarity, especially with how often most people in Remnant traveled. Smiling fondly at her new friend, Amber nodded.”I can't tell you how many times I've drawn someone's attention for doing something I would never consider bad. I don't exactly blend in yet." This bit, in particular, caused Amber’s insides to stir uncomfortably. Her mind flashed back to several minutes ago, when Lily was being bullied by a few of the ruffians from the Academy. Never had she considered that some of the students of such a prestigious establishment could be so completely rotten, nor could she fathom the idea that there were people within the city itself could be the same way. When Lily became withdrawn, Amber felt a sensation she hadn’t felt in a very long time.Heartbreak.It pained her to see her friend so disheartened, but with that came a sly grin that formed on the Princess’s face. It was time to empathize!“While I can’t say I know exactly how you feel, Lily, I definitely have an idea of sorts.” She said with a smile, nodding a bit as she spoke. “Growing up in Rift, I never really got to see the outside world. The most I ever really got was here.” She went on, looking up for a moment to the sky before her attention returned to the girl at her side. “You wouldn’t believe how foolish I looked when I left home - especially when I got to Setek. Eventually, Lily, you’ll learn everything you need to know. Until then, it’s best to enjoy the process. You - and even I - are still growing. You’ll learn a lot about yourself while you’re here at the Academy.”Raising her hand, Amber gave Lily a thumbs up with a wide and confident grin, winking as she let out a happy giggle. “I can even teach you a couple tricks I picked up before and after I left. Maybe they’ll give you a little bit of an edge - if not at least give you the foundation you need to really get into the swing of things!” |

A few of the things Amber had said made some sense to Lily. She could understand how being a princess might give you a different understanding of how the world around you works. Even Lily had taken pains not to do anything a princess might find offensive when they first met. A consideration your average student would never have received. She didn't quite understand how that may have led to Amber appearing foolish, she did at least appreciate that it would change her view on
"I... well, I've already learned a lot since I've been in Vytal,"
She said in response to Amber telling her she'd learn everything she needed to know.
"I guess the hardest part is figuring out what it is that I need to know. Once I know what I don't know though, it's pretty easy to figure out what I'm doing wrong."
She finally relaxed her arms and turned back to the princess as she said
"And if you wanted to teach me a thing or two, I certainly wouldn't disagree. The longer I'm here, the more I learn that other people can have a lot to offer. I've learned as much about myself as I have about what life is like inside of here. Without the threat of grimm constantly hanging over you."
That wasn't totally true though. She recalled the gigantic grimm which would have leveled Setek if not for the intervention of all those hunters that day. The grimm were still out there, and always growing stronger. And then there was that guy who had seemingly empowered that monstrous grimm... The idea of anyone working with the grimm absolutely disgusted her. That someone would ever give power to the enemy of man was a horrifying and detestable thing. Such a man both worried and angered Lily. Given the opportunity, she would have to do something about him.
It wouldn't be the first time she'd drawn human blood. The main difference was that it wouldn't be for her own safety alone. Such a man was dangerous to all.
"Every new thing I learn helps, I'm going to grow into the strongest Huntress that I can, I'm going to protect these kingdoms, and as many people within them as I can." She said, all traces of her former melancholy had burned away in the face of her determination. She had been saved by these kingdoms. They had spawned the ones who'd saved her, and trained them. She did not doubt that if one of the clan members from her former life had come upon her, they'd have left her for dead. She owed this society a debt that she intended to pay back.

She had been raised to believe such a display was quite rude back at home, but that didn’t stop Amber from staring at Lily with a slight smile as the Faunus girl answered her inquiries. In their short time together, the Princess had begun to see a lot of her young self in her new friend, a small fact that helped her empathize with her in ways she wasn’t able to with most. "And if you wanted to teach me a thing or two, I certainly wouldn't disagree.” The girl said in response to her invitation to be taught some things. Her smile widened into an almost goofy grin, a slight squeal emanating from the Princess’s mouth."Every new thing I learn helps, I'm going to grow into the strongest Huntress that I can, I'm going to protect these kingdoms, and as many people within them as I can."Amber nodded, understanding completely where Lily was coming from. “You know, that’s actually kind of funny!” She responded with a giggle. “I’m pretty much the exact same way. All my life, I’ve been in love with the stories of the Huntsman and Huntresses - stories of the other Kingdoms and Vytal. My father, however, had different plans for me.” She paused for a moment, sighing with more discontent than she had allowed herself to show in recent times. “That never caused me to stray from that path, though. I grew more and more determined.” She continued, stretching her arms high above her head as she looked towards the sky.“I’m sure you’ll be a great Huntress some day, Lily.” Amber added confidently. “And who knows - maybe we can hunt together after you graduate! A tag team duo like no other, how’s that sound?” She flashed a proud grin and a thumbs up to her new friend, feeling a stir of determination of her own burn at her very core. To meet people so like-minded, for Amber, was alien. She had few friends, if any, back at home - and even now that she had broken out of her awkward social shell, there was still a lot to be done to fully prepare her for the different sorts of people throughout Remnant. As the shop came into view, Amber’s eyes narrowed as she grinned - almost deviously. “So, Lily, tell me about your style.” The Princess asked, beginning her line of inquiries once more. “What kind of clothes do you like to wear?” She paused, taking a moment to scale Lily’s small figure and what she was wearing. “Or is it just that and the school clothes?” |

Lily listened to Amber's story intently, soaking up as many of the details as she could. The princess' life and motivations fascinated the girl. She wanted to ask her what her favorite story was, she hadn't had too much of a chance to familiarize herself with the stories about the hunters and huntresses. She'd focused her reading almost entirely on catching up for her classes. She had been so far behind every other student in every field with the exceptions of aura control and combat oriented classes. Even her tireless study hadn't left her with much spare time to spend on anything that wasn't martially important, or academically required.
She wanted to ask the princess about her father, and why he would oppose her dream. About the things that drove the princess forward, and what had inspired her.
"I will definitely graduate, and I will absolutely hunt with you when I do! You'd better not let anything happen to you before then."
Such a dark addition to the end of the sentence might seem rude, or inappropriate to most people, but to Lily it seemed a perfectly inoffensive request. When she'd met Amber, the princess was fighting a man who seemingly had the ability to empower grimm. She then moved to fight the gigantic snake monster. In that selfless, heroic moment Lily had first come to the respect the princess. She was proud to fight beside her that day, and proud to have been a small part of the destruction of the snake.
That she could help fend off such a monstrous beast made the nevermores that haunted her sleep some somehow less menacing.
When the conversation moved inevitably towards the shopping trip at hand, Lily couldn't help but feel as if her questions would have to wait. Her mind began churning instead to figure out exactly how she was supposed to answer that question.
"Uhm... Mostly just this, and the other one I have like it." She said, gesturing down to the black tattered dress her mother had sewn her. "It's easy to move in, and I like it pretty well."

"Uhm... Mostly just this, and the other one I have like it." The Faunus girl replied, gesturing to her current outfit. "It's easy to move in, and I like it pretty well."Amber responded with an empathetic nod, crossing her arms as she lightly tapped her left index finger against her cheek, pondering. She regarded Lily’s figure for a moment, her eyes scaling the girl’s small frame, similar to how a tailor might do to a client. In an effort Lily was made uncomfortable by such a thing, Amber maintained a deadpan expression as she did so, her eyes scaling back up before finally settling on Lily’s own gray eyes. Something to really make those eyes pop, perhaps? The Vytal student’s overall scheme appearing more monochromatic certainly made things a little more difficult. That said, Amber was confident in her ability to really help her new friend stand out. She’d be a head-turner, for sure. With a wide grin, Amber grabbed Lily by the hand. “Well, I think we’re gonna introduce a little color into your life, okay?” She said, giggling happily. “I’m thinking…maybe some blues, perhaps some whites. Something to compliment those eyes and ears, for sure.” Tugging gently on the girl’s hand, Amber continued leading her towards the shop, grinning ear-to-ear. It had been a long time since she had an actual friend, her only memory of such thing being the blue ribbon tied in her hair. Part of her wondered how that friend was doing, and whether or not she would remember her if they ever crossed paths again.Reminiscing caused the Princess’ mood the change abruptly, her grin fading into a slight frown and her recent bubbly attitude all but completely vanishing. The past was hard to think about, especially after everything she had gone through already - and all the amazing new people she was meeting. Amber could feel her eyes strain as she fought the urge to cry - ever so slightly, but enough for someone close to notice. She really hoped not to draw attention to this small fact, turning her face away a bit to ensure Lily couldn’t get a good look at her. Letting out a relaxed sigh, Amber looked around at the surrounding buildings, then up to the sky with a gleeful laugh. The two drew closer and closer to the door, Amber’s heart fluttering as she anticipated buying a dress of her own - and potentially wearing it to the Festival. Perhaps if she didn’t find a partner before then - if Ferr wasn’t willing to accompany her - Amber would invite Lily to go to the event with her. She wondered how her new friend would respond to such a platonic request, given where she had come from. Just the thought of her reacting the wrong way caused a slight fit of giggling, followed by the release of the girl’s hand. They were finally there!“Well, it looks like we found it!” Amber chimed gleefully, opening the door and bowing to Lily. “After you, my friend!” |

Lily had noticed the slight shift in Amber's demeanor. Her bubbly exterior shifted towards a more dour mood. If only slightly. Lily put a hand on the princess' shoulder. It was simply what she felt she needed to do at the time. It was a brief touch, and Lily said nothing. She didn't really think about the action until she'd carried it out. Once she realized what she had done, she quickly withdrew her hand and put it behind her head, her face flushing slightly.
As they entered the clothing outlet, Lily's eyes went wide, and wild.
Her first response was to scan the people all around them. There were a lot. With the Vytal festival coming up, tons of students were out looking for proper clothing, not to mention the business' regular customers and people visiting from out of the school. She hadn't expected such a crowd.
Her eyes began scanning each and every face for intent, sizing up body language. Her head started to swim, and she could feel a panic attack coming on.
She hadn't had one since her first week at Vytal had ended, but she was taken by surprise. Her breathing became heavier, and she froze.
There was one tool she had added to her arsenal that she hadn't quite developed on her first day. She activated her semblance.
Prior to joining Vytal, she hadn't ever really needed to use her semblance for anything other than running. At the school however, she found herself constantly using it in different ways. In this instance, she used it to slow the world around her. She breathed. She looked at the faces one by one. Happy faces, stoic faces, faces with hungry eyes staring at beautiful garments. Those faces that were cast towards Amber and Lily were not registering any kind of intent. One face seemed somewhat concerned, perhaps having noticed Lily's state, the rest seemed to be staring at Amber with curious looks on their face that Lily couldn't quite place.
None of these faces radiated ill intent. They were all going about their days, happily. Somehow each and every one of them was indifferent to the crowd.
She began to breath a little less shallowly. When she had calmed herself, she allowed her semblance to fade. The white, peace inducing glow of her aura remained for a moment as she began to breathe. The world resumed. Lily had successfully navigated her panic, and was now free to stare like every other girl in the shop at the wonderfully extravagant clothing.
From an outside perspective, it would appear as if the girl had gone from terribly upset to almost bubbling over with joy in the span of an instant, but for Lily the time that had passed seemed to take at least ten minutes. She grinned, looking up at Amber as the last of the white light surrounding her faded, no longer needed. "So, where exactly do we start?" She asked brimming with excitement for the trip to come. She hadn't realized how envious she'd been of the pretty garments others wore until the prospect of getting something for herself became apparent.

Entering the store, Amber’s grin grew wide and proud. She had never been to Vytal before except for a couple Festivals she attended with her mother and father, let alone explore the city and see what all it contained. This shop blew her expectations out of the water - completely. Her eyes scanned over the rows of dresses, the shelves of beautifully displayed clothing, and the occasional racks of accessories. There was so much to look at - and so little time to look at it. In fact, had the Princess not known any better, it was likely that her jaw would have hung open in complete awe. Eyes inspecting the dresses at the far end of the store, the Princess almost missed her new companion’s question entirely - "So, where exactly do we start?" The girl inquired. Amber had almost forgotten that Lily had never been in a place like this before - or at least she didn’t believe the girl had. “Uh, well…” Amber paused for a moment, her eyes shifting between the dresses and Lily with an awkward smile. The trip had been so spontaneous, how had she ended up so unprepared - better yet, why did she feel so unprepared? “Let’s head over to this end of the store, maybe?” She answered, pointing towards the end with the dresses. “We can start that way and work our way forward to the front. That way we can see most if not all they’ve got and make a good decision about what we wanna get based on that.” She nodded proudly with an audible “Mhm!” before turning back to Lily with a grin. “Any ideas what you might be interested in, Lily?” She laughed happily. “I’m thinking something purple - maybe blue - or both. Something that goes good with my eyes and hair.”Part of her swooned at the thought of being all dolled up for the Festival - especially the dance. She just hoped things would go her way. If not, then at least she’d be pretty, right? |

When Lily actually took a second to consider what is was she wanted to get for herself, she drew blanks. "Uhh... Maybe something black?" She said looking down at the tattered black dress she had on. It's old black fabric had been the only thing she'd really known for quite some time. She was used to how it looked on her.
"Or uhh.. I guess white?" She said, sounding puzzled. She was straining to imagine herself in other kinds of clothes, something she'd never really spent too much time thinking about until this very moment.
Her thoughts shifted to the small blue flower Sol had created for her, and a soft smile spread across her face. "Blue would be kinda nice too I guess." The lasting memory of the boy she'd stalked not even three days prior to this meeting with Amber returned briefly to her mind. The image of him presenting the flower made from military grade myomar fabric made her face flush red slightly.
When they arrived at the section of the store amber had indicated, Lily looked around in awe. There were so many different kinds of dresses. Pleated dresses, bubble dresses, pleated dresses, sun dresses, and all sorts of others. All arrayed neatly in a multitude of colors and sizes. Lily had so many questions. What kind of dress fit her best? Which would be the best color to wear? Which would make movement more restrictive? She looked at Amber, and then back to the clothes in front of her.
"There are so many to choose from," she said her voice full of wonder. This was only a small corner of the store, and already she couldn't believe how much variety was to choose from.
"What do you think?" she asked holding up a green strapless dress that was obviously far too big for her. "I like green as well, and browns, and greys." She said, listing off the colors that reminded her most of the woods and caves.
She smiled, suddenly a little thrilled with the idea of having other things to dress in. She had seen some people who looked really pretty in clothes like this, maybe she could too if she found the right dress.

THE PRINCESS + THE PARIAH ► amber + lily ◄
|
Amber’s mind had started to trail off, so much so that she had grown almost oblivious to Lily’s presence. All she could do is stand there, beaming at the selection as her jaw hung open slightly. Settling into the environment of the store, she felt her skin begin to feel warm - a welcome adjustment from the cool breeze that blew through the streets of Vytal. Admittedly, the climate of the neutral island nation was not one she was accustomed to. Back home things were much…she wouldn’t say warmer, but they weren’t as cool either. She remembered the other night with Ferr, being chilled to the bone as a result of being under-dressed for their brief moment on the rooftops.A sharp, cold tingle ran down her spine. Her face burned, the sensation slowly building up to her ears. Her eyes whipped back to Lily instantly as she became aware of the feeling, her cheeks beet red as she flashed an awkward smile at her new friend. Maybe something black? It was definitely a color that suited the Faunus girl, that much Amber would admit. It was also a color she seemed quite comfortable in, something that - to the Princess - was both good and bad. Amber knew the benefits of pushing one’s comfort zone - and wanted to push Lily to step out of her own. If things ended up playing into Amber’s hand during their little excursion, then not only did she want to set her new friend off with some new outfits - but a new outlook on things as well.Growing up and living what seemed like a relatively sheltered life would only do her harm.As Lily toyed with the notion of what colors would best suit her, Amber remained relatively mute. Her attention was rather divided, so much so that her eyes oft shifted towards the dresses. That said, she was able to heed Lily’s words enough to scan what was there for something meeting the Faunus girl’s tastes. Never before could the Princess have seen herself in such a scenario - offering ministration to someone she had only just met. The uncomfortable verity of the situation was that, were he alive and she remained home, Amber and Lily would likely never have met - especially considering her father would’ve considered the Faunus girl lesser to them. A runt, a rascal - a nuisance. Amber didn’t see her that way, though. Nor did she believe she ever would. That air of uncertainty that followed their conversation thus far, that perplexity that manifested itself in Lily’s voice, appeared to completely vanish with a smile. "Blue would be kinda nice too I guess." A Cheshire grin inched across Amber’s face, culminating as she beheld the flushed redness of Lily’s face. It was modest, but the Princess had made a fool of herself with the color so often at this point that it was hard to miss. Empathy was Amber’s strong suit, and she could tell just by how the girl stood there - red faced and smiling - that someone was on her mind. All Amber could do as she watched the Faunus girl peruse the selection, her voice taken by awe, was smile."What do you think?" The sound of Lily’s voice snapped Amber out of her odd trance, though the wide smile that stretched from ear to ear remained on her face. She was holding a strapless green dress, one that was noticeably too large for the Faunus girl’s figure. The Princess giggled aloud, cupping her hands over her mouth in an effort to hide the toothy smile that tried to slip through the interstice of her slightly crooked lips. Shaking her head, Amber gradually reached forward, taking the green dress from Lily’s hand while she smiled. “I think that this dress might be a little too large for you, Lil.” The Princess giggled, setting the dress back up on the hanger Lily had snatched it from.Turning back to Lily, she crossed her arms and rested the balled fist of her right hand against her chin, pondering as her eyes once again flicked up and down the girl. “Green, brown, and grays might be nice.” She added with an approving nod. As Amber’s mind raced through different outfit styles that might fit her friend, she did her very best to see them in any combination of those three colors, but all efforts proved fruitless. Not because the dresses in her mind looked bad by any means, but because every single outfit she paired Lily with in her mind came out blue. As she panned through hypothetical dresses, it became more and more apparent that this was the color they’d have to go for. There was no doubt about it.“Why don’t we find you something blue?” Amber inquired, releasing the fist she kept clenched under her chin to raise her index finger as if brilliance had overcome her. “It’s clearly a color that means something to you, right? Something from home? School, maybe?” - She let out an exaggerated gasp, inching close to Lily with a grin so wide it forced her eyes to squint, whispering just loud enough for her companion’s Faunus ears to her - “Is it because of a boy, perhaps?” |
