----- Never stop Running ----- tag: @hematos // words: --- // notes: --- ----- As the borrowed aura fled from Lily's body, she could feel exhaustion set in. She couldn't currently be at more than ten percent. She became less energetic almost immediately, letting out a wide yawn and sighing. "Oh wow, that really hit out of nowhere," she said stretching a bit at the table where she sat. She would perhaps swap her meditation and her training sessions, to let her aura recover a little more prior to her training session. That would however leave her unfit for additional library study as she'd planned, so maybe today she'd extend her rose manipulation practice to give her aura a bit of a break.
She was so caught up in the internal planning for how this new exhaustion might effect her day, she temporarily lost track of Guin. She suddenly blinked, and looked up at her companion. Lily was not particularly used to other people, nor was she used to social graces being a thing that must be followed, she was however aware of them, and felt a twinge of guilt. She managed to look up just in time to hear Guin's compliments on her pocket, and she smiled. "Thanks, I should have sewn it on the exterior, but you never know what uses a hidden pocket can have eh?" She said with a mischievous smile.
To be perfectly honest, she had no clue what she might use it for, but that didn't stop her feline ears from twitching with excitement for the possibilities. There were any manner of items which could be secreted away.
The most jarring aftereffect of the severed connection between them was the loss of the font of knowledge that had been made available to her. Ghosts of that knowledge still burned in her mind, but she couldn't recall anything quite so clearly as she'd been able to while using her semblance. It was a weird feeling, to know something with perfect clarity one moment, and then to lose it the very next simply because it hadn't been practiced while it was available to her. She wondered what secrets were lost to her, and part of her craved that connection again.
It was a strange thing for her. She had worked very hard for every scrap of knowledge she'd gained so far. She had broken herself against book after book to catch up to the rest of the school, and yet through this girl, the knowledge had been so easily transmitted. It was an amazing tool, one that she was intensely jealous of.
Still, a part of her knew that knowledge was meant to be earned. She wouldn't be able to rely on others for everything. That she'd been able to rely on another here was, frankly, miraculous.
She realized that since her request had been filled, the girl might wish to be left alone again, so she sat there a moment longer wondering whether or not she should leave. Finally, she awkwardly asked "So uhh... Do you wanna keep hanging out? I've got a little bit more time before I need to get back to work." She wasn't all together unhappy about the idea of spending more time with the girl, but she honestly knew next to nothing about her. Their bonding while sewing had been nice, and the girl seemed pretty genuinely kind, but she didn't know what else the two might have in common. -----

Guinevere nodded at Lily. She pondered the comment on the pocket for a moment, trying to think of whatever mischief she could get into with it. The only thing that jumped to mind would require her to be the lead in a dance and for the pocket to be open at the bottom. She internally thought of this idea for a moment, going over its merits before dismissing it. There were far easier ways to get into that kind of mischief around a campus like Vytal. Then again, she had never read about Faunus extensively. Did they go into heat like the animal aspects they held, or were they more like humans in that fashion? Probably a little too personal of a question to ask. Having put up with the issues of the female human side of things and knowing how animals operate, that would have to be maddening. She could embarrass Taupe with the question later. That poor bear.
Snapping pack to reality, she noticed Lily being perhaps a little antsy. “It’s fine if you stay – no issue at all.” She took a look at the dress, noting something. “One thing I noticed was that this dress was a few years old and you may have grown on is a bit – I think you expanded the seams well where necessary, but if you took the waist out a bit further than you intended while working on the top and hips….” She grabbed a piece of black lace about the same pattern as the transparent portions of the dress’s ruffles and a darker gray swatch of color. She looked up to Lily’s eyes in grabbing the grey, trying to find one that would complement them well. A few whip stitches later, she had a quickly thrown together belt/sash about three feet in length. “You may want something to bring down the waist a little.” She handed the sash over – a gift. “If you need to use it, it’s a lot easier than having to redo a seam or two, and you can change the color of the sash to match other accessories rather easily.” She nodded towards the bow in lily’s hair, and grabbed a piece to match that if she wanted to swap out the background color.
“Consider this more a gift than anything. If you don’t want to want to or need to wear it, you’re perfectly fine – it also gives you some fabric to work with in case you want to test your skills on some spare fabric.” She pondered a moment, giving Lily a little time to respond if she desired. Then she struck up a point of conversation that she had been wondering about the girl for the past half hour or so of their interaction. “…So, what brought you to Vytal?

Never stop Running tag: --- // words: --- // notes: --- Lily watched as the girl expertly worked on the belt sash, studying her every movement carefully. She may have been given a great head start, but that didn't mean she would be content with her level of knowledge. Anything else that she could glean from Guin would definitely be a bonus. She was pleased to find that for the most part, she understood her stitching technique pretty well, at least the one she used specifically for this piece.
She had been so caught up in watching the girl create the belt, that she hadn't really recognized that the piece was for her until Guin handed it to her. Her hand trembled as she reached out to take it. Gifts were not something the girl was accustomed to. In her life, she'd been given five, now six total. Her two dresses, the backpack she used at school, the stuffed kitty Mr. Flufflestiltskin, the blue rose made of myomar fabric she kept behind her ear, the princesses' shopping trip, and now this sash.
"I will treasure it," she said as she rubbed a cheek against the soft piece of fabric. She beamed at Guinevere, and said "I'm absolutely certain that I'll wear this. I would never break it down into scraps. Thank you so much!"
Perhaps her reaction may give the impression that the girl was maudlin, clutching the fabric and nearly on the verge of tears, but this was a touching gesture for Lily.
"Wait, I need to give you something to return the favor, one moment..." she said as she unzipped her bag. From within, she produced a small plastic bag which housed her remaining deer and rabbit jerky. "Here," she said offering the bag to her. She had a little more of the delicious smoked meat back at her enclave. It was the best gift that the little faunus had to offer. Her ears twitched expectantly as she held the bag of smoked meats out for the girl. She was, in all honesty, quite unhappy to be parting with the bag of flavor, but she felt the desire to repay this girl in some fashion or another. Earlier she had turned down her request to owe her a favor, so with any luck she would take this offering and Lily would at least be able to feel as if the scales had been somewhat balanced.
When the question had been posed as to why Lily had been originally brought to Vytal she stopped for a moment and pondered. "Do you mean, like, my reason to join the school? Or the circumstances that led me here?" She asked putting a finger to her lips.
"Because as far as reasoning behind joining the school goes, well, I guess my life was saved, and I found myself suddenly possessed with ideals that had previously seemed quite backward to me. I was told this school could teach me things that would make me stronger, and using that strength, I want to protect people who are unable to protect themselves." She thought back to her last days in the wilderness, the sensation of life leaving her body, the inability to feel her legs, the pain of the bone being knit back together. It was an incredibly painful process, perhaps the most painful thing Lily had ever experienced, however she was alive, and still able to run. She still had nightmares about the experience to this day. The nightmares which were haunted by raven wings and piercing beaks she could handle, but the ones in which she was no longer able to walk? Those were the ones that shattered her spirit.

What was Lily getting? She didn’t really need to repay Guinevere for anything. And to be honest, whatever it was, it probably wouldn’t go over too well with her. There were honestly very few things she really liked for repayment, and she didn’t take Lily to be that much of a cook.
And she stood corrected.
That was venison. Now, normally, a good steak or something would do her in, but venison had a special place in her heart. She had done enough comparisons between the minds of Grimm and animals that she had picked up a few things here and there, and response to game meat was one of them. She refrained from drooling. Hesitantly, she reached out and grabbed the bag in the most restrained fashion she could. She slowly opened the bag and picked up a piece to try out of courtesy. Up until this point, her slow actions might have had Lily questioning how well she had accepted the gift – perhaps Guinevere was reluctant to take it and stranged out by it.
Not after her first bite. She beamed. “This is wonderful.” She sunk down into her chair a little more. Munching away on the piece she had grabbed – she guessed it was rabbit, though she couldn’t be sure given her blissful state. A little tougher than she liked it, but then again, she also ate her steaks on the bleu side of rare.
Shaking her head slightly and coming out of her haze, she listened to Lily talking about why she came to Vytal. So, she had been saved by a huntress and wanted to become like that sort of a person. Were she a teacher right now, Guinevere would have probably retorted with ‘not good enough’ or some variant. The reason itself was hollow. Since she had been saved she wanted to save others? Then again, it was by and large the reason most of the Freshmen had for staying at Vytal after their years as an underclassman. After the steep drop-out rate the first couple years, students got a better idea of their bearings.
“I see,” came her reply, nodding slightly. Despite her mental criticisms, she still had half a strip of venison in her hand that she promptly took another chomp out of. She would give Lily the time to ask her something – for example, if she wanted to bounce the same question her way. She had told the girl that she was a Sophomore, so she did have a year more to think about it. And after that Will appearing a couple months ago, she had her reason.

----- Never stop Running ----- tag: --- // words: --- // notes: --- Lily smiled as she watched her newfound friend chomping at the bit to finish off the jerky she'd provided. She couldn't help but feel a bit envious, but she was mostly just happy to see that the girl had enjoyed her food so much. She hadn't cooked for many people, and she wasn't sure if this could be considered cooking in the conventional sense. She had tried making dried meats with spit roasted meat in the past, but it did things to both the texture and flavor that Lily wasn't fond of. This was just the result of smoking the meat properly and didn't actually require all that much kitchen finesse at all. Perhaps she should spend more time hunting wildlife, both her, and Raven seemed to enjoy this sort of thing quite a lot.
"If you like this sort of thing, I also do spit roasts from time to time." she offered with a smile. "Maybe one day I'll show you to my little home and we can share a proper campfire."
This was an offer that she'd only extended to one other, on a whim. Someone she felt to be a kindred spirit. She wasn't totally sure what had made her bring Raven out to her home, other than not knowing how else to win the boy over after their confrontation. Still, it was a place of peace and privacy that she didn't want too many people to know about. The more who knew, the more that would intrude upon her when she might prefer quiet.
Her mind continued to linger on thoughts of the huntress who saved her life, and the team they traveled with. She had continued to be inspired by those four every day during her tenure at Vytal. She smiled as she thought of one day being like them, strong enough to fend for herself, and noble enough not to run when things got too difficult.
She found herself curious, wondering what motivated Guinevere to fight. And so she'd ask her. "So.. What about you? I mean, I have my saviors to set an example. To show me what it looks like to be better, what made you decide to come to Vytal?"

Guinevere finished chomping on the last little bit she had in her mouth and took a big swallow of the venison. She had a little difficulty swallowing this, and held up her left index finger to pardon her delayed response. With that extended finger, she brought it up to her hairclips, first touching the one with red roses. Some of the red dust from the device moved up her finger to produce a light sheen. She then dabbed her finger to the second clip with the sky blue flowers. A bite sized piece of ice formed over the red coated part of her finger. She then brought it to her mouth, and with a soft crunch, broke off the ice and the red dust.
A light exhale later, some steam escaped her nostrils as she swallowed. “Sorry about that – needed some water. I tend not to carry the stuff on me so I need to improvise.” Tracing back to Lily’s comments, she made a list of the things she needed to address. “I would love to come by – do you have a camp in the woods around campus?” She knew a few of the students did for some reason or another – so it wouldn’t come as any surprise to her if Lily did.
She gave her a little time to make a response to that comment before addressing the other comment she was asked. She decided to start the response in the blunt sense. “Three months ago, one of the Wills attacked Vytal.” Lily had probably picked up on this if she even half listened to the gossip going about. There were probably even some seniors audacious enough to boast they had fought the thing. No, only one person really did that, and she was gone now.
“Some of us were upset about Rift, but the amount of sorrow shouldn’t have been enough to draw it here.” If Lily knew a bit about Grimm, she would probably have read accounts of communities that went through a bit more than civil unrest before even the lowliest of Grimm risked entering the city. “I am here because I want to understand Grimm. For things that don’t need to eat, and exclusively attack those with Aura for some sort of macabre ‘fun,’ for things that have been around since the dawn of Man, we only know that much about them.” She crossed her arms.
“I want to learn as much as I can about them because I want to know how we can ultimately help Mankind. Is there a way to drive them away without having to fight? Can we command them to turn away? Is there a way to make them fight each other? Is there a way to control them?” She knew the answer for this one for dead Grimm, and was glad that it appeared Lily had not caught up on who she was or her reputation at the school. “Then with this, I want to teach. Getting the information would be useless if I kept it to myself. For that reason, I won’t graduate until one to three years after you. You’ve probably noticed that the huntsmen of the school are all ‘Doctor’ or ‘Professor.’ That’s what I’m working towards.”
She leaned more over the table, elbows resting on the top. “Though most people don’t know about that part.” She had started work on her Thesis a little earlier than most, so she would probably be out shortly after Azure, but it was still something she did on top of her schoolwork and didn’t talk about a whole lot. She liked the idea of teaching and guiding, though she quite disliked the attention directed towards it. Particularly in her chosen field – Grimm Studies.

----- Never stop Running ----- tag: --- // words: --- // notes: --- "Perhaps one day," Lily said as she considered the offer she'd just made. She barely knew this person, and only vaguely trusted her. Why was she already making invitations such as that one? Even so, it wasn't anything with a promised date. She could put off making the date official for a while yet.
It felt very nice though, to have someone enjoy something she'd made so very much.
She had spent so long destroying. Hell, even the creation of the food that Guinevere was currently enjoying was a product of destruction. Still, very rarely had anybody other than Lily benefited from her destructive tendencies, at least in Lily's mind. She failed to give herself enough credit, more often than not. She didn't consider that the grimm she killed may have gone on to claim innocent lives. Nor did she consider that the people she'd killed would have perhaps ruined more lives. They had always simply been enemies in her path that needed cut down.
To see somebody in person, enjoying something she'd created, well it was a beautiful thing.
When Guinevere began talking about the Will that had attacked, and grimm in general, Lily found herself on edge. She felt herself tensing up slightly, but nodded along as she spoke. She breathed deeply for a short while, before finally saying "Well, the grimm are very..." She paused, anger was flashing through her mind, but this was hardly the place or the time for that emotion to take her. She gritted her teeth. Grimm had dogged her for her entire life. Where she was from, the grimm didn't have to wait for too much provocation to attack. The tribes and villages out in the no man's land are protected to some extent, but not as much so as the villages. It wouldn't take half the negativity to draw the grimm in. In the forests, and the caves that Lily had personally called home for a long while, it took even less. And she had always been suffering. Whether she was feeling guilt over her actions which led to her parents deaths, or anger at the grimm had taken their lives, she was a beacon of negativity that always drew the grimm to her. They had no qualms about attacking a single dirty girl on their own turf.
It was more the memory of the harrowing time she'd spent in the wilderness that had finally come to a close just months prior that began Lily seething. However, she was maintaining a tenuous control of her emotion, and said softly, through gritted teeth. "I respect your goal. Any huntress who seeks to work against the grimm is doing the true work that all who hope to bear this title should do." She said as her claws extended and dug into the table.
She realized what she was doing, and put her hands in her lap, willing the claws to retract, but having minimal success.
Suddenly, the girl was cloaked in white. She breathed deeply, the brilliant aura blossoming forth like a beacon shining in the night. She sighed and felt calm returning to her. Any who may have been touched by the rays of her aura would feel a similar calming effect. Peace returned to the girl's mind and she sighed.
Slowly, she let the white cloak that had enveloped her fade, and smiled an earnest smile once more. "If I happen to achieve my own goals when I graduate this academy, I would very much like to have someone like you working with me." She added as a final statement. "We need more huntresses and hunters in this world who see who the true enemy is."

Guinevere eyed Lily’s reaction. Not the best relationship with Grimm, she could assume. Putting some of the earlier information into context, she assumed that the reason her mother never taught her to sew was because she never had the opportunity to do so due to Grimm intervention. The camping and venison made sense as well in this context – she was from beyond the protectorates. Why, anyone would freely elect to do so she still couldn’t fathom. Even the lawless areas of Pinnacle and Setek were under protection from Grimm without any fees.
She sighed though – the table had nothing wrong. Its placement made it ideal for Guinevere’s sewing as well – between a couple buildings and under a tree, but not quite off the beaten path of the courtyard made it ideal for splaying out all her wares. Her verbal response was curious though. Only those who fought Grimm were worth the title of Huntsman? She internally scoffed at this. “Not all huntsmen fight Grimm.” She said firmly. She wanted to nip this one in the bud. “We are trained to, should the need arise, but our jobs are first and foremost to the people of the world. I’ve seen huntsmen helping in the fields of Setek, and have talked with Legion Specialists. Wherever our skills best fit the need is where huntsmen go. There is no need to unnecessarily risk a life for some offensive measure when strength can be found and built within.”
She sat back a little bit. She knew she was probably digging into Lily a bit, but the prepositions she was making were still incredibly off-key. “To that end, though Grimm may appear to be our enemies, mankind’s greatest enemy is born out of our greatest strength - each other. Together, we are strong – and it is together that we were able to make the few footholds of civilization we have. However, if you sow discord like what has been happening between Legion and Rift,” she paused for emphasis. “Then you divide us, and turn us on one another. It’s from these seeds of chaos that draw Grimm. It is in those moments where we can lose. The Will’s attack was a good reminder of that. Disharmony makes us easier to defeat. And if someone wanted to reap humanity for their own, it would only take a couple of those seeds to undo everything we have worked so long and hard for.”
She had not intended for this to turn into a lecture on ‘the true enemy,’ but this was one of the things she had learned at Cela and embraced in the carnivals of Pinnacle. Individuality and division were both strengths and weaknesses, and though they were to be embraced, they were also something to be wary of.

----- Never stop Running ----- tag: --- // words: --- // notes: --- "Doesn't building strength within give the society as a whole a better ability to strike back at the grimm in future generations?" She countered. She shook her head and sighed. "The kingdoms exist to protect people from the Grimm. More than that though, they make this possible." She said, gesturing to everything around them. "Where I'm from, out there, well," she bit her tongue, already divulging more than she'd meant to. Too late now, she would power through it. "You don't know what it's like. Nobody trusts anyone. Outsiders are enemies, and there's no room to grow. Everything withers and dies. The grimm threat is constant, and violent... and..." She trailed off, considering the many hardships she'd faced at the claws of the grimm. She steadied herself, talking in a low, dangerous voice.
"The grim are never ending. Perhaps there is some force that drives them, and it is good that you seek to know more about them, but do not think that there is any struggle that is important to man more so than the grimm. Everything else is secondary. As you say, they may work the fields to provide for the hungry. They may work the labs to advance the technologies of these kingdoms, and they may stockpile the strength of the kingdoms, but I've seen the ruins of old kindgoms out there. The grimm will find a way in and they will clench their teeth around the throat of man given the first opportunity. Any lapse in vigilance will be deadly." she paused, seemingly snapping out of the lowered tone. Her dangerous vibe being replaced the by the soft light of her aura as she calmed herself.
"That all said, I don't really get people. I don't understand politics very well, and I get how other humans can be equally dangerous. I just... I just can't stand the idea of people fighting against each other when there are much more imposing threats in the world. That's all." She paused for a moment, in thought again. "I don't really get what's going on in Legion and Rift. To me, those are just places on a map still. Even so, I think it'd be best if they stopped fighting. I've seen tribes decimate each other for no good reason. I've seen what happens when weakness and anger take root. Like you say, when we divide ourselves, we weaken ourselves and that's never good. If the grimm weren't such a pressing threat, then perhaps it could be survivable. That's why I'm firm in my position that the Grimm are the true enemies. I will forever do what I can to weaken them, to hold the line against the threat I have always known. I'll leave man to people who know man better. I... I apologize if I seem a bit obstinate in this regard. The grimm have taken a lot from me."

Guinevere gave a soft smile. Lily had told her exactly what she had said, the source of the threat. “You say that out there, no one trusts anyone. That division in humanity is what makes ‘out there’ vulnerable to Grimm, not the existence of the Grimm themselves.” She leaned forward again. “And that division is what makes humanity weak. Not the Grimm. Grimm are merely vultures to a carcass. A plague against the starving. In this way, we are our worst enemies.” She paused “In that regard, we pose the greatest threat to each other.”
“I would much rather treat the disease than the symptoms. Hunters target Alphas not because they are stronger, but because they are uniting forces in the Grimm. Humanity’s lack of understanding and empathy for each other are the things that drive humanity against themselves. Yes, fighting Grimm is great, but if you cannot defeat the thing that draws them in the first place – disharmony – then you cannot pose to defeat them as a whole. I do not propose an Alpha-equivalent situation for Humanity; the fallen kingdoms on which our four are built on top of are evidence that this does not work.”
“However, the disharmony between Rift and Legion is weakening all four kingdoms and Vytal. And when the kingdoms feel the need to defend themselves, then less can go to the outside lands to those who elect to live in the distrustful world beyond their protection. And once those protections are drawn inward, the entire outside is weakened and can fall. And when the outside falls, the Grimm gain a lot more freedom to take from a lot more people.”
