Lily's eyes never left Zari as he slid along his path. She had expected a little more time to plan her attack against him as he slid, but his sudden stop and reversal left her tensed and ready to spring. There were two things that one should know about Lily when engaging her in combat. The first being that she didn't like surprises. The second being that she was incredibly cautious. She was not the type of fighter who would rush in until she had some understanding of her opponents movements, their strengths, and their weaknesses. Doing so would have often meant death for her in the past. Under optimal circumstances, she would stalk an enemy for weeks if necessary in order to ascertain their weak points, strengths, and any powers they might have. For her, leaning on the fly like this was a jarring experience.
That said, her cautious nature and general paranoia would not let her down. As the tonfa hit the earth, near her, she cocked her head, glancing briefly to the violence inflicting stick curiously. One eye was trained on Zari, and the other was angled toward the ground near her. It was just on the fringe of her periphery. When he began charging, she cartwheeled to the side immediately, grabbing one of the sticks designed for meting out violence. As she returned to her feet, she jumped backwards, tracing the speedy professor's path with her eyes.
If she wanted to win this fight, she'd need to create openings.
Some people were fast, to be sure. For Lily though, speed had been a way of life for so long that it seemed effortless. Her casual jog was nearly as quick as the average student's sprint. Running for her was fast enough that one would swear her semblance bled over into her natural movements.
However, when Lily sprinted, when Lily moved as fast as she could without her semblance she would put even most hunters to shame when it came to speed. She advanced on the teacher exuding an air of deadly intent. She crouched low as she approached him, and pounced forward as if to strike him square in the jaw. However, when she was mere inches away from contacting him, she sprinted off to her right, hoping her simple feint might reveal something about how the Thorne would defend himself. Should the teacher be quick enough to grab her arm prior to her pulling herself away, she would transfer the momentum from her incredible sprint into a flying knee, aiming just below whichever arm grabbed her own. She had prepared for such a scenario. She gripped the stolen tonfa tightly, she was unfamiliar with the weapon, but could surely make some use of it. Holding on to i was surely better than leaving it discarded on the ground for her opponent who was surely more proficient in it's use to reclaim and use against her.

In the moment Lily evaded her attack Zari flashed a slight, faint grin. The reasoning behind it was that Lily took his weapon off the ground. Of course she would, Zari thought as he watched her carwheel and dash away. He analyzed the way she grabbed it and held it. Obviously she wasn't too familiar with weapons or she'd have taken it and held a professional grip. For Zari two objectives had been met. He discovered her method of fighting along with her response to discarded weaponry. She didn't even have to use it. But by taking it the girl kept it out of the hands of someone more experienced with it. Making it harder for Zari to fight. "Good." The professor muttered as he took a defensive stance. It he had to see how the girl attacked.
Using the information he'd gather so far the man prepared himself as Lily bolted towards him. With his head facing her on a slightly tilted angle, he kept his neck hidden with his chin and jaw. By fanning his arms outward he made his left hand into a fist and the right a straight palm. His knees bent and back straight, the man took the appearance of a martial artist. The kind you'd only find in movies, or on the summit of a mountain. Overflowing with confidence and power.
In truth Zari had learned many skills in Cela. From meditation to aura control and even defensive combat. His goal was not to retaliate however. Oh no. This stance was meant to take on an incoming attack head on. And so when Lily was close Zari had been prepared for the attack. When it turned out to be a feint however, Zari simply watched as Lily ran off to the side again. "I see. So that is how you operate. Interesting." He spoke silently. There was no need to raise his voice anyway. Since Lily was a faunas, she could hear him well enough.
Because Lily didn't attack him outright, the man relaxed his body before spinning to face her. The way he managed this was by keeping his right foot flat and kicking the ground with the left. The moment he did this, he took on a new stance. By standing up straight and leaning forward slightly. His palms would face outward and shoulder length and elbows drawn in. His right knee was bent forward, making him grow into a smaller target. Lily was a tricky little speedster. She could get him from any angle if she wished to do so. With a sigh Zari unleashed some of his aura in order to use Aura Defense to increase his tolerance. "Come young lady."

Seeing the change in Zari's stance made Lily wonder exactly why he had adopted the stance in response to her previous movements. It had to have been a counter to something she'd done, but she couldn't see how at first. She kept her distance for a few moments, never standing still, moving around the teacher in a wider circle, to see how he shifted as she moved. Getting an idea for how he moved his feet here could be useful. It could allow her to predict his movements in response to her own when she'd go in for her second feint.
He kept his arms high, so if she wanted to start chipping away at him some cursory attacks to his legs might work. He was leaning forward, and his knee was bent. It was a pose similar to one her mother had taught her. Her mother's rigid fighting style had taught Lily plenty about how to look at forms and analyze them, but the girl had always preferred more free form movements in her combat. Her mother had always warned that too much movement would tire the girl out in a real fight, but there was no way that she could have predicted the incredible stamina the girl would acquire.
She rushed in again, this time with the intent to land at least a small blow. Her right hand gripped the tonfa as she neared him, she swung the tonfa in front of his face, intending to break his eye contact with her momentarily. In that instant, she let aura flow into her right foot, using the momentum from the swing to aim a kick at the teacher's forward facing knee. Whether it connected or not, she would immediately backpedal to put some distance between the two of them once more. Intent to see how he might respond. From the moment the tonfa was set in motion, she was watching the teacher intently, watching to see any small movement, anything that might be indicative of a pattern in his fighting style.
She was still unsure if she could win against an opponent like him at all, especially without the use of her semblance, but if it were possible, she wouldn't find the path to victory through wild attacks. She would have to chip him down, destroy his endurance and then go in for the kill.
Aura Points 105/120 (-10 Use of semblance earlier in the thread) (-5 Aura kick)

Zari watched as Lily pranced around the training field once again. He was not surprised by her weariness towards him. She was doing all she could do against an alien opponent. Study and test the defenses. However it seemed Lily was trying to test her luck as well. This technique was practiced by the Monk of Cela to withstand and disperse the pressure from taken from powerful attacks. And so as Lily swung his own weapon towards his face, Zari activated his Aura Defense. The aura surrounded his body in a similar fashion as Lily's. However, since she was close to him, Lily would be able to detect the faint scent his aura released. It smelled of a field of roses. Yet it was tainted heavily by a hint of fresh, warm blood.
As her fist approached his face, Zari took the blow to his face. The hit would land on him and cause his head to flinch backward. However that was already to be expected. It was time to act. The professor whipped his arms around Lily quickly. Should the woman be caught by his grapple, then when Zari's knee was kicked, he'd fall down to the group with Lily in tow. As he fought to gain a good grip on her, the professor would wrap his legs around the student. This wasn't a monk technique either. It was a relic of his delinquent past.
"Try this one one. Learning this in the back of The Fallen Crest." Zari chuckled before continuing to wrestle for a grip.

----- Never stop Running ----- tag: --- // words: --- // notes: --- Lily had found herself pinned to the ground by the more experienced professor. She gritted her teeth, doing her best to vie for a better hold than the professor got on her. She had not expected for him to actually lean into the tonfa and take the hit to the face. She normally would have done more to dodge out of the way if not for that. However, he had successfully grappled her. She wasn't totally comfortable with being grappled, but that was more of a personal space problem than anything, and she was all too familiar that such hangups in a battle could mean her downfall.
So, she struggled to avoid giving Zari any sort of advantageous position on her. She threw her arms around his back, and squeezed tight, to pull herself in as close to his torso as she could. This would both protect her vital areas, and reduce his ability to put any real power behind his blows when aiming at her. It left her kidneys a bit exposed, but should she succeed and finding the hand hold she was looking for, that wouldn't matter.
her hand made it's way to the base of his neck as she held herself there, and she extended her claws. Not all the way, just enough to prick the sensitive flesh at the base of his neck where the spine was the most vulnerable. Her other hand let it's claws extend fully, sinking into his back and giving her an iron clad grip so that she couldn't easily be flung off of him like this. It was at that point that she would have smugly proclaimed 'checkmate' if she were the type who was chatty in combat, or more accurately, if she knew anything about the game of chess.

As the two wrestled on the ground, Zari was sure he'd win this small spar against the Faunas. Not only did he have the teachings of monks, but he still knew how to use some back alley wrestling moves. A simple grip and pull in the right spots would cause Lily to tap out in pain. The professor would make sure not to make it to hard on her. Just enough to get the job done. I think I have this one, Lily. Zari thought with a smirk until the faunas girl threw his arms around his back. The movement was familiar in a way that made Zari's blood rush. At first he blushed when Lily pulled herself in so that she could claim a hold on him.
The awkward hold became a struggle for Zari to manage without letting his mind drift into lewd areas. For God sake I need to wrap this up. This isn't looking too good. In sense of the word. The man shifted his hand towards Lily's diaphragm before he felt her claws. And that is when Zari's body became stiff and ridged. His grip loosened as Lily's claws teased and lingered about his tattoo. It was at this point that a memory suddenly flooded his mind. A memory of both a worse and better time.
He could remember many years ago, at the age of eighteen he was wrestling in the basement of a warehouse. Back in the day of Black Pharaoh. The basement was littered with the recently dead. Bullets, blades, dust and bodies. It was like a war was compacted into a thirty by thirty foot space. The walls were burnt by bombs and bullets holes. Blood stained the four corners and the floor. Lights which once hung overhead now became part of the carnage down below. In the middle the carnage was Zari, still in his youth and filled with a maelstrom of rage and hunger. Fighting against another, more infamous criminal. The two tried to kill the other; but with no guns or blades, the relied on fists. And so the two eventual wrestled to the floor where Zari had the upper-hand. The scene was similar to the current one. Zari had the man pinned, but unlike Lily, the man attempted to reach back to strangle Zari.
And to end the fight in that moment, before his own life was snuffed out...Zari snapped the man's neck with ease. As his opponent became lifeless, Zari howled like a wolf with laughter. He questioned why he didn't do it sooner and commented on it's ease.
The memory caused the Professor to stop his struggle and remove Lily from his grip. As he spoke, Zari's voice became mildly shaken with panicked breaths. "You win. I have seen what I must. Very good." Having remembered his past, and a scene which was so close to the current one had caused Zari to worry about Lily's safety. He'd left that life behind. The killing, the pillaging, the wrong and sinful life was behind him. But the instinct was still there, under his flesh and consciousnesses. Just one misstep, one second of freedom would allow The Reaper to reappear. He couldn't let that happen. So he took the lose against his student.
The professor began to gently push Lily away from himself. Quickly he took his tonfa back and began to walk towards his staff. His body radiating a wild whirl of energy. "You will receive and A for today." He called back with some level of control restored. "I am impressed. Keep up the training. I'll be dropping in on you from time to time. Any further questions, just find my office."
