PLAYED BY VALKYRON AGE: 30 bIRTH MONTH: JUNE | FEMALE HUNTRESS FAUNUS (WOLF) | |
SHANI ROSALVA |
★ APPEARANCE
At first, it is rather hard to pick out Shani's Faunus nature. Upon first inspection, she seems to be a normal-albeit very tall-human woman. This is mostly due to the fact that she doesn't have any obvious faunus traits. The trait she has that marks her as a Faunus are the retractable claws that lie within each of her fingers. While retracted, her fingernails look completely normal. However, at will she can choose to extend her three inch long claws, causing her fingernails to discolor into a deep black as they come down to points. Looking away from her faunus traits, she is also very fair skinned, which makes her crimson eyes stand out all the more. Standing at almost six feet tall, weighing in at around one hundred and seventy five pounds, Shani is very much easy to pick out of a crowd.
In terms of clothing, Shani has a heavy preference for heavy cloaks and leather armor over close fitting cotton shirts, and snug fitting jeans of various colors, along with boots over any other type of shoes. Generally speaking, she tends to wear armor everywhere she goes. She usually opts for leather, as it is the lightest and most flexible armor that can be made outside of aura armor, but she is definitely known for taking up heavier and heftier pieces of armor when the situation calls for it.
★ PERSONALITY
★ HISTORY
Shani's story starts in, of all places, the White Fang, with her mother: Fajra Alba. She was a Wolf Faunus who lived through perhaps the worst era of race relations between Humans and the Faunus, facing insults, threats, attempts at violence, and even outright refusal to be served by anyone who wasn't a Faunus. Of course, this was only kept in the country of Legion, where race relations between the humans and Faunus were lower than any other country. Because of this, Fajra was very easy to recruit into the White Fang, due to her own prejudices. When she initially joined the White Fang, Fajra was one of the most vocal people about how they couldn't just stand around and take the punishments they were being given solely because they were different. Over time, the leadership changed, and it eventually reflected her own ideas..but in a dark, twisted way. Fajra only wanted the members of the White Fang to be able to defend themselves should someone attempt to assault them. This new leader...was very bloodthirsty.
While Fajra was very reluctant to pick up a blade to directly assault Humanity, rightly thinking that it would only make relations worse, she did so regardless. Perhaps the thing that scared Fajra the most was that while their methods were brutal, violent, and efficient..they worked. Once they started hitting humanity back, their demands for equality were listened to. Faunus were no longer threatened and sometimes even assaulted in the street as if it were normal. But she still felt like what they were doing was wrong. And yet, she continued working with the White Fang. At some point, they were forced to camp out in the jungles of Rift. They were to hide out in the jungle, and then periodically attack the nearest city.
However, after a time, Fajra's group was attacked, violently. Not by the humans, no. By a tribe of Faunus, who had made their lives away from the cities they had been systematically pushed out of. Fajra was terrified, as she watched the fellow Faunus move with a grace and precision that made them appear to be one with the harsh terrain of the jungles. She fought and held her own admirably..but the Tribal Faunus noticed something. She refused to actually deal any permanent damage to any of them. She utilized a weapon she had stolen from a huntress in training, one that allowed her to use a precision club. She systematically knocked out anyone that came to fight her
Unfortunately, she couldn't manage forever. At some point, she was overwhelmed, but taken as a captive of the village, rather than killed. She was given a choice: Join the tribe, or be killed to preserve the secret of their existence, as the village was formed out of Faunus that had run from society out of a feeling of unacceptance, from various kingdoms. She chose to join. Over the years she was within this group of faunus, she met a man that she fell rather hard for. Flynn Rosalva. A fellow wolf faunus from Setek. Eventually, the two were given what could only be described as a shotgun wedding in the village. Soon after, they gave birth to their child: Shani Rosalva. It was around this time that the white fang-having gone through less extensive measures after the loss of a good plan-managed to get a lot of rights for the faunus, through the use of fear over anything else. Eventually, word of this even reached their tiny village. Slowly, members of the village returned to society. Fajra had taken on a new name, and Flynn was presumed dead. The two took on their new lives in Rift, in the large capital city.
This is where Shani's story begins. She had always been fascinated with the weapon that her mother kept around the house for home defense. She was deeply interested in how it went from club, to rifle, to sword. She showed a deeper interest in the stories her mother told her at bedtime however. Eventually, she got into a fight with her mother and father about wanting to join Vytal Academy. Originally, Fajra herself was highly against it, and her father didn't want to see his little girl exposed to such violence.
At this time, she was still too young to go to a combat academy of any kind just yet, so the subject was allowed to drop. However, they got into several more fights about this very subject until the time came where she was very nearly old enough to apply for classes to prepare her for Vytal Academy-in fact, she was only two years younger than the required minimum. It had become obvious to her parents that she was not going to simply sit idly by and be a citizen, nor was she going to be content just being helpless. So, with heavy hearts, they allowed her to attend when she reached the proper age, on the caveat that they be allowed to take her someplace first.
The place they took her to? The very village that Flynn and Fajra met in. The village itself was still functional, but much smaller, run by people who had been friends of the couple when they first had started dating. They told her the horrific, graphic stories of what her choice of life entailed, as they had all seen a variety of different assaults by the grimm.
She was not frightened however. So, with her mind set, and proof being made to her parents, they set her up with a very basic fighting tutor, in an attempt to catch her up with the rest of the batch of students. She was taught the very basics of combat, and was even shown a variety of melee based weapons. Of the ones she had been taught, she showed an equal proficiency with both polearms and swords...with one slightly exotic weapon included in her skillset: The whip. She was taught for two years, until she was of age to join the underclasses of Vytal Academy. This beginners skillset would follow her into her initial training, when she first made Sunset Curve, all three of these weapons were included into the process.
From there, she had a very normal education. She picked up on the skills she didn't have quickly-a grace given to her by her faunus heritage. Strangely enough though, while most other huntsman and huntresses in training included the use of firearms in their weapons, Shani entirely ignored this. She never really explained why to anyone. And it didn't really hinder her combat skill in any way. In fact..Shani seemed to shrug off most hits she took. Most of the people who didn't understand how aura really worked-usually her fellow students-considered it to be because she had a relatively high amount of tolerance for pain when compared to others, usually ignoring the fact that her Aura flared up when she ignored pain.
And yet, they would all quickly be proven wrong. In her second year at Vytal Academy, Shani picked up on the ability to enhance her defensive power, having picked up offensive rather quickly, which surprised all that found out about it. And yet, this was the year she got into her first fight with someone over her faunus heritage. Someone had whispered something about a "mangy dog" as she walked past. What happened next she could only describe as a blur. But to those who had been around her, they say that her ears-in spite of being "normal" human ears-twitched, and she turned to face the one who had said what he did, and asked him to repeat that, but louder. And oh, did he. He talked about a "mangy mutt" and proceeded to question why the academy allowed lesser creatures such as them to attend.
After that, her aura had flared up, and she dashed towards the racist boy, who proceeded to draw his weapon and fire at her..but the bullets were crushed against her aura, tough they obviously hurt her she only moved faster..and when she hit him, he staggered back like he had been smacked by a massive hand. This process proceeded for about a half a minute before her aura was exhausted, and both she and the boy collapsed. She was punished of course, but she was not forbidden from attending the academy, as she was a model student, and had never lashed out before.
It was then that the situation was explained to her. For the rest of her sophomore year, she tried to trigger her semblance again, with varying degrees of success. When she used it..she always felt angry, even if she activated it while calm, there was a twinge of rage whenever she used it. She moved faster, hit harder, all while the opponents attacks did less and less damage. She found a word that accurately described it in a dictionary her dad kept: Impetus. It meant many things, but there was one definition that leapt out at her: Fury. After that, she had a relatively normal education, and graduated with rather high marks, and the added ability to heal others who had exhausted their aura.
Upon graduation, she went to the Kingdom of Pinnacle. There, she started her career as a hunter, quelling the increasingly violent white fang, battling grimm, and generally improving her skills. This happened for several years, and she came to call Pinnacle her home. Eventually however, someone who knew Fajra from the White Fang spotted Shani. She broke into Shani's home at night, and instead of attacking her, shook her awake, calling her by her mother's name. She very quickly found out who Shani actually was. Shani herself doesn't remember this night for some reason or another.
But, ever since that night, any White Fang members she comes across have attempted to kill her. She of course fought back, developing more and more skill as she survived more and more battles. All the while, there was a specific functionality of Aura that she had been very curious about. Unlocking. Over the nine years she had been an official huntress, she had done as much studying as possible about this rather strange act of using Aura. In theory, it was simple.
Jumpstart the aura of another by reciting a phrase important to oneself in their mind, and push their aura into the body of the other person, causing a reaction, which usually activated it. She hadn't tried it yet though. That was, until she came across someone who was trying to become a huntress herself. She was good with weapons, a great engineer..but couldn't summon her aura if her life depended on it. Shani and this girl became fast friends after she protected the human girl from a rather aggressive White Fang member. Shani mulled the idea over in her head for quite a while. Eventually..she tried it. It took half of her aura..but she had done it. The girl was able to manifest an aura of her own. It was a brilliant blue, and fit her rather well. That was the last notable thing that Shani did however. Where her story goes from here? Well, that can only be a guess made over the course of time...

★ COMBAT NOTES
WEAPON: Sunset Curve
As far as weapons go, Shani carries a rather..interesting choice of weapon. At first glance, it is almost like machete, save that it has a curved blade, and is deceptively heavy. Interestingly enough, this is a weapon that has its origins in Shani's training. It of course is capable of transformations, as most weapons utilized by huntsman and huntresses are. In terms of how it works, it features a speed of transformation that is slightly faster than most other weapons. In its most commonly seen form, Sunset Curve is what could only be described as a machete in terms of the type of blade it is. However, this is usually used as its "compact" form. Despite this, it is still very much useful in combat, as the weight is almost perfectly balanced, allowing for a quick draw and effective use of the weapon as a sword.
From this form, Shani can send Sunset Curve directly into a secondary form with a pull of a very subtle trigger. Once this trigger is pulled, the blade of Sunset Curve seemingly breaks apart into several segments. However, these segments are directly connected to each other by an extremely high tensile strength metal wire. In this form, Shani uses a more flowing fighting style, utilizing the segmented blade as if it were a whip, instead of a simple blade.
A second pull of this trigger will retract the segments back into the initial form of the blade. However, it can reach its final form from either this state or the compact state. In either of its two previous forms, Shani may push a second trigger, slightly below the first one. When this is done in the compact form, the handle itself unfolds and expands outwards, locking in place to form a polearm. When done in the whip form however, the whip first retracts. Then the same process occurs. One notable thing about Sunset Curve however, is that it has no firearm functionality. This was no accident, as it is meant to purely be a melee based weapon.
And yet, like most weapons that are utilized by the huntsmen and huntresses that exist around the world, Shani's weapon is meant to utilize dust. Within every form of this weapon, there is a small magazine cartridge slot, aligned with the top of the handle. The "cap" of this section opens up when pressure is applied, allowing Shani to either insert a powdered dust cartridge for short bursts of elemental power, or a dust crystal for more extensive amounts of elemental utilization.
MISC.
While her primary weapon doesn't carry any ranged functionality, Shani is no idiot. She understands the need for ranged weaponry. As such, she carries a pair of bladed machine-pistols that she lovingly calls her peacekeepers. These guns carry the accuracy of a steady pistol, but with the rapid firepower of a machine gun. However, the need for melee potential still stands. As such, each pistol has a four to five inch curved blade housed against the bottom of the pistol's barrel.
Along with her Peacekeepers, Shani carries a series of small throwing knives for dispatching more..human targets. Along with these, she tends to carry a double set of six dust cartridges, along with a double set of the same number of dust crystals. These colors tend to be random, and while the cartridges are compatible with all three of Shani's weapons, the Crystals are specifically for use with Sunset Curve.
Aura. The manifestation of the soul. Every living being carries this supernatural source of power. Shani is no exception to this rule. When in use, Shani's Aura surrounds her in a noticeable dark green, dancing around her like leaves on the wind, while also bringing forth the scent of a jungle. And perhaps the strangest thing about her aura is that in most people, it brings about a distinct feeling of serenity, while in some it brings about the deepest feelings of anxiety. Despite its rather fragile appearance-flickering around her like fire or quick flashes of green light-Shani's aura is a very powerful thing. Most of this power comes from Shani's equal amounts of skill at boosting her offensive and defensive powers using aura. However, another useful aspect of her aura is her ability to unlock the aura of others. This is by far the most draining ability in Shani's arsenal of Aura based abilities, draining her enough to make her almost ineffective in combat immediately after doing so. This is due to the fact that-unlike her ability to enhance her offensive and defensive capabilities, and even unlike her ability to mend the wounds of others-She has only just mastered the ability to unlock Aura in others.
Offensive/Defensive Enhancement: 2 AP per Minute
Aura Unlocking: 50% AP per use
Mending: 10 AP per use
In the simplest of terms, Impetus is a semblance revolving around turning any and all damage taken into strength. With a name that translates loosely to "Fury", that much would be expected. However, what usually isn't expected is how it works. It is initially a very subtle Semblance, being that it passively stores a fraction of all damage taken as potential energy. With each hit taken, Shani becomes a bit better in all aspects of combat. Speed, Strength, Durability. All of these things, and many others are given a slight boost. This boost never will give an outright advantage against someone of equal skill, nor will it ever bridge the gap between someone of greater strength than her. While she can still feel the pain that is inflicted to her, it never quite seems to slow her down. Of course, this is just Shani biding her time and waiting for her power to become needed. When her power is fully unleashed, an explosion of verdant green occurs as she burns through about fifteen percent of her total AP. Her aura then begins to surround Shani in a flickering, glittering aura of green, while her eyes turn a deep blue. While this state is active, Shani burns through her AP at a rate of 25 per minute, but while this state is active, all the damage she has taken turns into a massive boost in all forms of ability, making her more flexible, agile, fast, strong, and durable. While this state is active, many who have seen it refer to her movements as being "full of grace, but with a noticeable air of deadliness surrounding them." However, while this semblance is active, Shani goes through a very definite personality change. Going from a caring, cheerful, but worried individual to an almost wild, energetic person.
Of course, this can be somewhat dangerous. Like everyone, Shani has her limits. Should she misjudge her own limitations, Impetus will simply overload her aura, which shuts her aura down temporarily, leaving her defenseless. And yet, should she need to do so, Shani can draw on some of the potential energy her body has stored and convert it directly into kinetic energy, allowing her to do a variety of things, from boosting her own speed, to making her hit harder, to even making her already enhanced reflexes soar to even greater heights. This particular ability causes an immediate 5 ap burn for the use of the power however. And yet, This is a very dangerous semblance, and it requires a very intelligent individual to utilize it to its fullest potential.
Translation/Note: Shani's semblance essentially works on the premise of converting kinetic energy to potential energy, and then storing it within herself. In doing this, she can passively boost all physical aspects of herself by a moderate amount. When active however, the amount of energy she stores skyrockets taking about half of all the kinetic energy and turning it into potential energy, and the rate of transfer from kinetic to potential and then back again becomes almost instantaneous (I.E. fractions of a second), allowing her to just get faster, more reflexive, stronger, and even more durable by preventing weapons from actually being able to have enough energy put behind their attacks to work efficiently. They can still be damaged, but it is much more difficult than it would normally be while her semblance is active, due to the rate of transfer from kinetic to potential energy. However, she can only run this for about two minutes, before going on about a one minute cooldown phase, during which she can only use her learned aura abilities, along with her aura on its own.

SEMBLANCE: Impetus
