PLAYED BY ONYX nineteen (19) AUGUST SIXTEENTH (08/16) | female vytal SOPHOMORE faunus | |
AZURE VAN HAMELIN |
⚡ APPEARANCE ⚡
Azure’s a fairly tall girl. Standing in at around 5’8 without heels, she towers over most other females in her class. Genetics have been kind to her, as despite her diet of mostly hamburgers and junk food, her tall frame is well supplemented by a fit and somewhat curvy form.
The soft mocha skin that covers Azure’s body is accompanied by the full lips and round button nose typically characterized by her ethnic heritage. With strikingly large front canine teeth, and tall fuzzy bat-like ears proudly protruding atop her head, the girl makes no efforts to conceal the fact that she's a Faunus. The most striking facet of her appearance is also the cause of her namesake. Two bright blue glimmering eyes sit delicately placed on her visage, boldly contrasting her darker skin.
Her hair is also dyed a complimenting blue. It’s curls are styled into long, wavy crochet-braids on one side, and then three cornrows on the other to simulate that rebellious half-cut look without actually damaging her hair.
Her outfit is designed to stand out equally as much as she does. She wears a navy blue and gold marching band overcoat atop a maroon corset, while studded bracelets and fingerless gloves adorn both her hands. Body piercings are also generously spread across her form, including lapis lazuli studded rings on her navel, human ears, and also along the edges of her Faunus ears.
She sports shredded black jeans over her legs, while black studded combat boots cover her feet and raise her height up an extra inch. Gold accessories like zippers and buckles are also used to break up the sweeping monotony of black, while her bright blue eyes and hair remain as the most standout features on her body.
Vocally, Azure's voice is rich, throaty, and soulful. She speaks in a cool and soothing tone that's well fitting for her lackadaisical nature. This effect would be doubled in a performance when attempting to belt out those power notes, but with no formal training her confidence in her singing skills is quite poor.
Recently, she's begun singing lessons with her teammate Guinevere for... Varying degrees of success. Talent with an instrument doesn't translate as well into vocal training as one would think.
⚡ PERSONALITY ⚡
I understand about indecision, but I don't care if I get behind. People livin' in competition, all I want is to have my peace of mind -BSTN
The Van Hamelin family. From that house descended a long line of great minds. Politicians, doctors, military generals, and even a few lowly Huntsman filled out their ranks. While they may not have been among the wealthiest or most powerful clans in Legion, their names still carried a weighted respect within the city’s walls.
Azure’s parents were no exception. Axel and Rosa Van Hamelin operated as technicians within the Atlesian army. Many of the airships that currently dominate the skies above Legion have at some point passed through their expert fingers.
Above their own notoriety, having so many prominent figures within their lineage has aided the family in participating within many social circles. Axel and Rosa have rubbed shoulders with about as many aristocrats and noblemen as one could stomach. As such, they’ve been invited guests to dozens of galas and banquets throughout their careers. Of course at these parties, deals are being made and backroom contracts were signed, but those were just a bonus for the opportunity to enjoy the luxuries of high society life.
Azure viewed these events a bit differently. While her parents were having the time of their lives, the young girl resented every moment of it. Those parties were full of nothing but stuffy old bureaucrats putting on airs while trying to impress people they barely knew. Everything felt so irritatingly fake and plastic that even as a child, she loathed the pompous properness that swept over those events like a warm fart.
To escape the boredom, the girl’s mischievous side often got the better of her. She was eagerly drawn away from the crowds in order to play harmless pranks on the other guests. Tugging on wigs, leaving chocolate on seats, and maybe a frog or two in someone’s purse if she could figure out how to smuggle one in. She would do anything to get a rise out of these people, and in doing so she felt like she proved that these high society socialites were still humans beneath all the makeup and grandeur.
As much as Azure hated being dragged to these parties, there was always one aspect that she enjoyed without fail. The Music. At these ritzy balls and galas, live orchestras often performed for the amusement of their guests. Be it brass, string, or key, Azure was always enamored by the raw talent displayed by the musicians at play. For them to create such pleasing melodies that affected the mood of the entire event was mystifying to the young girl. It was almost like they were casting magic, and every person on the dance floor was under their spell.
An ability that Azure soon began wishing for herself.
As Azure grew, so too did her responsibilities. Being the sole heir to such a notable family raised the expectations placed on her by a great amount. In the wake of politicians and scientists, her parents decided to start Azure’s meteoric rise to greatness early. As soon as she was schooling age, her parents immediately filled her schedule with private tutors and instructors to help pave every second of the young girl's life on a path of success.
Making friends and finding creative hobbies were put on the back burner in favor of higher education. They would just slow her down, and a Van Hamelin should always stay ahead of the pack.
For a number of years Azure did sit at the top of her class. Always punctual, always polite, always the perfect girl for her parents to boast about... Yet as she grew older, the cracks began to form.
While her cousins and peers were graduating into accelerated learning classes, Azure was somehow falling behind. For the young girl, she had already seen where those paths lead and wanted nothing to do with them. Internally, she had already decided that becoming another emotionless suit in the crowd was a fate worse than death.
Her parents saw things a bit differently. Their own daughter had every opportunity given to her, yet she lazily and selfishly denied everything in favor of doing nothing but slack off and avoid work. She was quickly becoming viewed as a blight on the proud Van Hamelin family name, and tensions were starting to rise.
On another day and after another heated argument, a teenaged Azure shut herself in her family’s attic as she’d done many times in the past. Her rebellious streak was growing. Between piercings, boyfriends, and a run in with the law involving a can of spray paint, things were quickly spiraling out of control.
The young woman often sought her solitude in her home's attic when her parents got on her nerves. It was dark, quiet, but most of all peaceful. She felt free enough to lay around and relax between her math tutors and science lectures. The cramped enclosure offered feelings of safety.
But something was different that day. Her eyes had immediately fallen on a previously unexplored corner of the room, as if something was calling out to her.
Digging beneath a pile of old boxes and books, she unveiled an old familiar sight. Something she hadn’t seen since she was a small girl.
A Guitar.
Immediately, memories of the joy she felt while at those orchestras flooded back into her mind, and with them, the envy she had for those talented musicians who played there. A smile crept onto her face as she plucked at the strings of the woefully out of tune instrument. She had no idea how to play, but she had a sudden drive to learn.
As the years went on and Azure’s talents with the instrument increased, so too did her rebellious nature. She eagerly and often blew off her classes in favor of practicing her skills with the guitar, or performing mock concerts for her friends. The girl was a natural talent. All the drive and devotion that her parents had tried to direct towards her studies, were instead being shifted into becoming a prodigy in music.
Most would be thrilled, however was not the intended path her parents had willed on their daughter. To them, music was more of a distraction than a profession. It was something that was inhibiting Azure from tapping into her true potential.
For Azure, music had become more than just a simple outlet of escapism. It represented freedom.
The young woman was now seventeen, and while her peers had all been inducted into various branches of business and society, she was still seen as spinning her wheels at home. The weekly arguments with her parents became daily, and as her parents pushed her harder and harder to realize her missed opportunities, Azure finally pushed back.
She realized that the only way to experience true freedom was to break the shackles her parents placed on her, which would have been impossible while living in Legion. Having already completed her undergraduate courses a year earlier, she packed her things and left for Vytal Academy.
Becoming a huntress, traveling the world, and sharing her music with everyone who’ll hear it? Who would ever turn down an opportunity like that?
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice. If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice! You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill, I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose freewill! -RUSH

⚡ COMBAT NOTES ⚡
WEAPONS
Azure’s weapon, aptly named Be Sharp, is the most used tool in her repertoire… Though not for the reasons you’d likely suspect. The compact mode for this instrument of war takes the form of a bright red ‘Flying V’ guitar. It’s this form that also sees the most use, as the young woman is rarely seen without her fingers on the cords, strumming new melodies.
While it’s visual design is pretty standard, it still carries a certain “flashy” essence when cradled in the arms of the young Huntress. The metal base is coated with a blood red metallic sheen, though it tints to a darker navy blue around the edges. It’s pearl white strings stretch up the wood-plated neck, before finally meeting at the dark blue headstock resting at the end of the guitar. The most gaudy aspects of the instrument lies in the frets and whammy bar, each plated gold to match the accessories of her own wardrobe.
Despite Azure’s immense care for the instrument, it has still sustained a number of scratches and dents due to the numerous battles it’s been put through. Despite the damage, it still sounds as perfectly in tune as the day she crafted it, while it’s blade has remained just as sharp.
On the subject of sharpness, its namesake is nothing to scoff at either. During transformation, the body of the guitar rotates forwards and slides up the neck of the instrument, revealing the impressive telescopic forked blade inside as Azure grips the new weapon by the neck. The blade itself measures at around five feet in length, while overall the sword stands at 6’6 from tip to base, making Be Sharp taller than the girl herself.
Though Azure had to sacrifice some complexity of the design in order to keep its musical integrity, that doesn’t necessarily put her greatsword at a disadvantage compared to other weapons. While Be Sharp is lacking in an alternative fire mode, it's blades are able to separate into a double-bladed forked design. This purposefully allows for Azure to channel her semblance as a current through them, thereby igniting the Dust that’s slotted into the weapon while also allowing her to unleash a variety of electrical projectiles from the weapon itself.
MISC.
Azure keeps a healthy supply of Red(x4), Yellow(x4), Orange(x2), and Gravity(x2) dust within her weapon's arsenal.
The Girl's natural Faunus ability is manifested as Enhanced Hearing. Her second set of Faunus ears are finely tuned to detect frequencies that are well beyond the range of humans. Her ears are so acutely wired that if focused hard enough, she could easily hear a pen drop in another room. Despite how sensitive her hearing can be with two sets of ears, The Faunus female is still oddly attracted to loud noises, as evident by her taste in music.
On the subject of loud noises, Be Sharp is able to project sound by Azure forcing electrical currents through an internal amplifier via her aura. By channeling her aura into this device, she is then able to influence the volume, range, pitch, and distortion of the guitar at will by dictating the amount of current it takes.
Azure’s aura is immediately striking to any who observe it. Rather than enveloping her body in a warm glow, it flickers and surges chaotically around her. It illuminates the area with it’s vibrant cyan light as it seems to lash at the very ground beneath her. Her aura feels neither hot, nor cold to the touch. It’s simply a sensation that reaches out and hits you.
Her strange aura also carries with it the pungent odor of burnt wires, as well as the contrasting pleasurable scent of morning dew after a fresh rain.
As mentioned before, Azure's aura has the ability to illuminate the area around her with flickering light.
Also considering Azure's aura was already quite volatile, it didn't take an overwhelming amount of effort to learn how to harness that energy. After her first year of training in the academy, she was taught how to tap into the vast destructive capabilities of her Aura, and enhance her offensive capabilities through it.
Amplitude
Electricity is free. It courses through everything and everyone, binding people together while freely traveling wherever it wishes. Electricity can be as steady as a current, pulsing information through nerve endings like a battery, functioning as a constant connection to the world around you. It can also be sudden, instantaneous, and powerful. Like the crackle of lightning striking the ground to thunderous applause.
Azure covets that connection. The ability to resonate within people, no matter how constant or brief. To leave an impact wherever she stands. That is her Semblance.
Much like an Electric Eel, Azure’s body is able to generate and regulate electrical charges that are much stronger than what’s considered safe for a human to withstand. Her body can somewhat act as a living battery, storing energy within herself until she finds the right outlet to discharge it. While in times of leisure she typically funnels this electrical energy into her music, her performance in battle has more practical applications.
With a small pulse of electricity, Azure's senses become completely in-tune to the electromagnetic fields around her. She is then able to acutely detect any disturbances that occur within those fields. Strong presences like those with high levels of electrical capacitance (such as other humans) become easily discernible by these signals. Conversely, those who lack an electrical footprint, such as Grimm or beings of aura, appear more like shadows to her inner eye. Acting as a cold silence that cuts through the static noise.
As every living thing generates an electric signal, normal walls and barriers are no obstacle for Azure's keen senses. However her senses are not perfect. Heavily insulated or rubberized objects can throw off or completely block her signals, while absurdly charged objects like power generators can render her senses totally blind. Beings that skim the edges of her radius are also harder for the girl to discern, as their signals fade into the natural static around them.
(5 AP per 5 minutes, 180ft radius)
By discharging her body’s capacitance to a greater degree and letting out a stronger pulse of current, she is able to channel it directly into the forked metal blades of Be Sharp, forming a 'Jacobs Ladder' that enables her to unleash various arced bursts of electricity from her sword. By completely discharging the energy evenly across her body, she can envelop her form in electricity and jolt anything she contacts for a period of time.
This power is not without drawback. Discharging her own electrical capacitance in this way can be dangerous, as it runs the risk of burning out. On the other side of things, containing too much electricity could become even more devastating. After all, an overcharged battery typically leads to a messy explosion.
(5 AP per attack, 25 AP per 5 minutes for the aura)
